Hi guys, I may well be concerned about nothing I'll admit, but should the transmission housing on my 400cc savage be far too hot to touch after a short ride in the country, about 30 minutes , relatively quick but not going over 100kph (60mph). I have done a couple of minor mods, pod filter and carb jet (proper model specific kit) bike is running great, and I never took notice of any excessive heat before I performed these mods, not to say that it wasn't getting hot beforehand. The only other thing that I have done is changed the oil, although I'm pretty sure I didn't cock that up. Is this sort of heat normal or is something likely to be going wrong, any advice would be greatly appreciated, cheers

This is the issue up-jetting the carb. I read on American bike forums how they seem to like to tinker with upjetting carbs and changing the transmitions on Jap and english bikes. They then post pics of exhaust glowing cheery red and ask why. Akin to the proverbial “Lost over weight American tourist looking for his tour guide.

I can understand the transmission issue because of the very long roads they rid on.

But yeah jokes aside the upjetting is the issue here. Some air cooled 4 strokes actually have iol coolers fitted as standard.

I would recommend you give your bike plenty of oil changes or even consider uping the viscosity (more viscus slightly) of oil you use very slightly making sure it's semi synth too, cos you will fry it fairly quickly.

pull the plug and have a look,
it may always have been the nature of the bike to run hot,
most air cooled bikes do,
you may be able to add a after market oil cooler kit, if you are really worried, i'd probably just go up a size on the main jet to make it run a bit rich, that'd hopefully run it a bit cooler

Yeah I'll go up a size with the main jet, and the oil is semi-synthetic. I guess what I'm really wondering is, does the increase in engine temp have a big effect on transmission temp? I'm not overly worried about the bike, it was a cheapy I bought for my 30th. Something to tinker with, I realize that messing with factory settings causes problems but that's all part of the fun. Thanks for the advice, very much appreciated, Cheers

The filter is just a cheap bolt on that I modified to work properly. The jet kit was model specific, standard was 125, now is 147.5 and have a 152.5 to fit, not showing any major signs of running lean (popping, hesitating etc) but I imagine it will run cooler with a bigger jet, I have also heard that NZ 95 octane burns hot so I will try changing fuel too. I suppose that if the same oil is running through the engine and transmission it makes sense that the transmission will heat up. Anyone had experience fitting oil coolers to these bikes?

do you still have the airbox and original filter???
if so, id pop that back on for a bit with the original 125 main jet,
and see if the temp is the same,

oil is running right through the engine including the head which gets pretty damn hot, thus heating up the oil in the process,

they are pretty much a japanese home market bike, so not many people have them, ive seen a few here in nz, but we seem to get a lot of the random jap bikes. free trade and all that jazz Very Happy

see if you can find a bike specific forum, they may have some random info which may help
