Hi all just won this -> https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230535532682&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_774wt_1141 The mounting points look very similar to my 400 does anyone reckon I'll have a great deal of difficulty installing it? Mine's a GSXR400 GK73a.

I wouldn't have thought that would work... The engine is going to be a different size, with things in different places yes?

It would be like trying to fit a ZX9 engine in my ER5...

But good luck with it!

It will fit if you spend alot of cash modifying the frame. Its too wide and tall to fit at the moment.
Plus you will need the ECU, loom and various sensors.

Hope you got a large budget.

I know a lot of people do the Thundercat 600 engine into FZR400's without too much of a problem. But have no idea about GSXR's.
The SRAD is a pretty massive bike and the GSX-R400 a pretty tiny one Smile

The thing is, that is a known conversion. There are a few known conversions that people have found out already work by research or whatever. For example, the Africa Twin engine in a BROS 400, the FZR600 engine in an FZR400, the Fireblade engine in the CBR600, and to a lesser extent the RD350YPVS engine into a Mito.

However, I don't know of anyone who has ever fitted a nineties 600cc GSXR engine into an eighties designed 400cc GSXR. That doesn't mean it is impossible, it just means that bikes aren't like lego, you can't easily buy a part from one bike and fit it to another. Again, note the word 'easily'. I don't say its impossible, its just a darn sight more hassle than selling a bike and buying a bigger one.

The thing with something like the 350 mito is that nobody makes a beam framed USD forked 350cc two stroke twin. 250cc two strokes are expensive, whereas RD350s are relatively common.

I don't see ANY advantage whatsoever to putting a GSXR600 engine in a GSXR400 frame. Especially when you could go out and buy an SRAD GSXR600 for about £1500.

I'm sorry, I stick with my original comment. You fail.

I'll never understand some people's logic. Do the deal then ask questions afterwards, just seems a totally odd way of doing things.

Id of thought a Suzuki oil boiler motor would of been closer to fitting. Even then it may well be of the wrong width to fit that frame.

Why would you want to put a more modern 600 in the older 400 frame? The srad is probably not far off the same weight.

really that can't be the worst that we've had.

However. It is an engineering project and will therefore require a moderately well equipped tool shop, additional parts and some skill to achieve.

Or a bigger budget and handing over to aman who has those things.

Even dropping a CB400 into the 250 frame - which is identical and part of the same series - requires the 400 carbs, 400 auxilleries and modification to the 250 wiring loom.

only an absolute fucking retard would take that sentence as gospel (ie someone like marjay).

the bottom line is anything can be made to fit anything. as proven many times on this very forum.

Thanks for that from the most respected member of this forum (!). Actually I think you'll find that I did explain that anything can be made to fit anything with enough money and expertise. I also said that the end result won't be up to much, and when you can buy a GSXR600 SRAD for £1500 or less, I fail to see the point.

someone told me there was no way i could get a speed triple swing arm to fit a zxr750 frame, that was all the motivation i needed,

the way i see it is, you have an engine, you have a frame,
why not give it ago, you'll be no worse off than iff you never tryed,
i'd definitly give it a go,

some one put a 750 engine in a vespa, surely this'll be considerably easier Very Happy

Hi

I would doubt it would fit even vaguely easily.

Unless you want to do a load of fabrication (including a load of allow welding) then the engine mounts will need to be very close. I would doubt they are that close at all. Given that Suzuki changed the engine mountings greatly between the oil cool GSXR750 / 1100 and the water cooled 750 / 1100, it would seem unlikely that they would keep similar mounts between totally different bikes several generations apart.

If you can get it to mount then you need to get the sprockets to line up (and entirely possible you will have to worry about the front sprocket position directing the chain through the swinging arm at the mount). Electrics will require the GSXR750 cdi, etc. Depending on the ignition systems you might find the rev counter doesn't work, or works at half / double the real engine speed. SRAD has downdraft carbs and not sure about that model of GSXR400 but you might not have space for such a setup (let alone an airbox so it works OK). You will need a 750 exhaust bodged to fit (probably one of the easier bits).

As soon as you start chopping stuff up to try and get it to fit you pretty much render it worthless, so easy to lose a load on a half hearted attempt.

God knows what it will handle like with the weight of the 750 engine likely in a different position.

The mentioned FZR400 / 600 swap is easy as the 600 is basically a stretched 400 (probably explains why the 600 engine is a bit weal). Plenty of internal engine bits for the 600 are marked with the FZR400 model code. If the models are closely related (oil cooled GSXR750 / 1100, FZ750 / FZR1000, etc) then engine swaps are likely to be easy.

All the best

Keith

I suspect the OP is looking to put together a 'sleeper' bike, the sort of thing that looks like it is sub 33bhp but has the straight line speed of a supersports bike.

Which leads to speculation about his licence... Smile

BenR, how much access do you have to the machine shop at work, and have you done any projects remotely like this previously?

I work for a well known coach builders they have a machine shop there. I've never undertaken an engine swap but I'm looking forward to getting the tape measure out & researching about fitting a bigger engine & the engineering involved. I think peeps have got the wrong idea about this thread but you've summed it up in one sentence cheers. Thumbs Up

BlueX5 grow up! Before you start on at people about karma bashing perhaps you shouldn't do it yourself.

Marjay there's lots of points about doing this project (if I do it) for one as Kal says it'll be a bit of a sleeper, I should imagine it'd go quite well. I like the styling of my bike & being the SP it's a tad rare.

Keith I wasn't intending to fit a 750cc engine it's a 600cc SRAD unit.

where I have seen this done before it has been all with all engine ancelleries*, including the carbs and you will almost certainly have to bodge the wiring...

You will probably have issues with the engines breathing so a K&N kit might be worth looking at and getting it jetted to run properly...

* If you dont have them, get hold of them before you take the engine apart. The worst that happens if you don't need them is that you eBay them off again.

Wiring shouldn't be a problem just fit the SRAD loom, clocks etc... the main thing that concerns me is the carbs & airbox. By the way I have had a full bike license for 15yrs. Thumbs Up I'll have to see once I've picked the engine up but physically it looks smaller than the 400 engine apart from the barrels/head.
