Based on my research evaluating motorbike sales/pricing markets, mainly based on ebay Yamaha R1 is the bike who looses most of the value when being sold in winter or around the winter time. Basically R1's can be cheaper then R6 and they are. ____________________ Theory Passed: 23/10/2008 49/74 Bike Test Passed: 05/01/2009 1 minor

Spoke to a couple of dealers recently who said they would take more or less any late model bike from a decent manufacturer but flat refuse to take Fazers on PX because nobody wants them. You're obviously finding the same trying to sell yours privately.
If the R1 is as you describe, I'd swap it for that reason. In that condition, you should get £2.5k any day. However, I very much doubt it is anywhere near perfect, and that kind of mileage must come with some serious backup (all MOTs, FSH etc.). Even then, nothing to say the owner(s) haven't disconnected/swapped clocks between MOTs.
I'd look over the whole thing very very carefully before comitting, check all the paperwork, and do a full HPI check. All being kosher, though, it would be a great bike to have. ____________________ Current: Ducati Panigale R / Ducati Streetfighter S / Suzuki GSX-R1000 L5 |

Sometimes Parkers is just useless. It depreciates bikes by a standard method and applies no premium to certain bikes and brands that do, in reality, demand a premium.
It doesn't go back to 1992, but take this example:
1994 Fireblade
A poor one commands more than the good condition private price quoted by Parkers, and a genuinely good one will set you back £2k+, even more for straight a 1992 model. If you could find one, which is bloody difficult.
Example 2:
1996 Ducati 916
<£2k for a good condition 916? Bullshit. A genuinely good one will set you back twice that, or more.
Example 3:
1994 Honda RC45
hahahahahah! If ever you needed proof that Parkers isn't Gospel. You'd be lucky to get a complete wreck for £5.5k (their price for a good one, private). You're looking at £15k plus, even for a tracked bike with tatty fairings. Much closer to £20k or more for a mint, low mileage, one owner bike.
Point is, Parkers is just a guide and doesn't actually take all that much into account but for original RRP and a standard depreciation curve set early on.
If you could find a genuinely mint 1998/1999 R1, then there is a premium attached over and above whatever Parkers has to say. A similar premium, I would suggest, to the very early model Fireblades. Especially as good ones become rarer. ____________________ Current: Ducati Panigale R / Ducati Streetfighter S / Suzuki GSX-R1000 L5 |

I'd look at it the other way around.... why would the R1 owner think he was getting a good deal swapping his R1 for your fazer?
Theres only a few of reasons I can think of.
The first is he doesn't want to run a gleaming sportsbike through the winter.... & wants a 'hack'.... but if the 'hack' is as valuable as the R1, then its not really a 'hack' is it? So I think we can discount that one.
Next, the R1's phucked. Been smashed, or thrashed, & re-dressed, or something, or its just started clonking or missing on gear-changes pointing to impending doom or similar.
Next is they have scared themselves stupid, put thier licence in jepordy, or realised cramped sportsbikes cause back-pains etc. & having had thier summer fun, and looking at colder weather, 'just' want something a bit more 'sensible'.
So three options, two of them are not so great for you, one neutral.
I'd say you have about a one in three chance of NOT being stuffed on this deal........... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Want a cheaper bike to do mileage on also seems a good reason.
Thinks that the Fazer may actually be easier to sell with winter coming.
Know someone that wants a Fazer.
And various more, plus your last point I'd suggest is a few separate points . |

Personally I think something like an SV650 would be more suited to the winter than an R1 |
