Back protectors

I don't have any back protectors in my jackets (although they have sleeves for them in the back). I have read the varying accounts, solid ones are killers, no protection is also a killer, is there any middle ground protector? Are the old soft leather padded under the clothes MTB ones good enough for road use protection? Is there anything else I should look at? Is it being over paranoid not wanting a solid back protector? And of course, is there any recommendations?

Forcefield back protectors came out tops in the Ride test a while ago. They do jacket inserts as well, hunt around and you can pick a second hand one cheap. Or they're about £40 new.

I believe that test was conducted by a guy that worked for Forcefield. Laughing

Anything that offers you a CE approved level of protection should be ok. Anything that offers the higher level of protection (Level 2) is better. Personally I swear by my Knox contour, don't like the Dainese Wave as it's too slim at the top.

Forcefield stuff is also pretty good to be fair.
