Holiday adverts in the back of the newspaper - whats the....

After a cracking Sunday dinner at the missus' parents house on Sunday, I was flicking through their copy of the Mail on Sunday and came to the holiday pages at the back - I noticed that the prices for some of these things were.....well, fantastic. Too good, in fact, and experience has taught me that if something sounds too good to be true, you can bet your ass that it is.

For instance, I saw a 2 week holiday in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in a 5 Star hotel, all inclusive, with all taxes included, airport transport, the lot, for £595 - in my own browsing online I've been lucky to find 10 days half board or even B&B for £650. Even after reading the small print I couldn't find anything suspicious.

Anyone booked through one of these things before? Enlighten me if possible, thanks.

Have a look around local travel agents too - I've been surprised, but often there's actually better deals there than you can find online, it seems.
Before the 'credit crunch' you can find some seriously good deals - some friends did Teneriefe half board in a decent hotel, 14 nights including flights and transfers for £250 each!

Don't know about the ones in papers, but it does seem the internet in this case isn't always the best way to go.

Yes you do have a point there, I recall seeing a Cruise offer for egypt in a Travel Agents last week that was stupidly cheap, I guess the thing is going to a travel agents entails sitting there for X amount of time waffling bollocks to get a deal, then going to the next travel agents, doing the same, and haggling the best price between them, which is annoying and time consuming, which is why the internet fairs well in this regard.

Be very careful of the Mercury Direct Holidays ads.

The package looks great and very good value but try getting a flight!

My parents looked at one of the holidays featured, they phoned up and went through all the hoops of where and when - then they got to the flight details, after 20 mins of asking about which airports/time, they discovered that they didn't have any flights from any airports anywhere for that package, so it was a complete waste of time!! Sad
