I saw a couple of bikes with disc locks on them and want to know what people think of them and which one would I choose if I were to get one.
I currently have a 4kg chain and padlock on my bike as it is kept on the public street.
What do you think?

Xena do alarmed disc locks, they can be somewhat sensative but good for the most part. Thumbs Up

Many disc locks can be easily broken, my advice would be to go for a forged one, I just bought a motrax vishas for £35 and am happy with it.

I have a heavy chain for the rear wheel and one of these for the front wheel.

One of them xena locks. I was going to get an alarmed one but considering I have to park my bike out of earshot from the flat I decided against it.

The Xena disc lock alarms are good, i've used one and for the most part its been a good.. however the battery is dead now and i have no pennies to replace it atm :\ Bummer.

I use a cheap aldi or lidl disc lock, but I have a great big F off chain and padlock + the bandit has a datatool system 3 fitted. Wink

I wouldn't rely on a disc lock alone unless you leave your bike in a v.public place. I reckon 10 minutes with someone who wants your bike enough would have it off...

I use the disc lock, with my chain for best security. However - someone did still try and dig my ignition out a few weeks back Sad Bastards.

If they wanna nick it, they will nick it.

I once had my Super Tenere nicked from the back yard of a refuge with 7' high fences and a locked gate. The bike had disk locks on BOTH wheels, and they had to get it across 40' of grass lawn that was looked out onto by four apartments and an office. You would think it couldn't be more secure.

Mind you, it was in fucking Dagenham Rolling Eyes

But in general disk locks are, at the very least, usually a deterrent.

Just don't ride off with them still on Laughing
(and if ya do, don't worry, almost everybody does it at some point)

I find my fk off chain fits perfectly around a street sign in our area right beside where the bike parks if I'm not taking it with me. Unchain the bike. Wrap the chain around the post a few times and lock it up. Its still there when I get back and close to the bike.

I have two big F off chains and two disc locks, I chain both bikes together so if anyone moves either bike the alarm will sound on the bandit Thumbs Up

A month later bike had a service and they had to replace my disc brake.. it was f00ked Sad

Great idea so just went out side to check out what to chain it to.....nothing!! Such an old road, no road signs, street lights are only on one side and the nearest one has double yellow under it! Doh!

Oh, and my disc is 5.2 cm wide....

Nowhere in the highway code says you cant park a chain on a double yellow. Wrap the chain around the light. Anyone stupid enough to try and steal a chain from a lamp post needs to climb and their head examined.

When you return its just a case of unlocking it from the lamp post and carrying it to the bike, which is probably closer than the house.

I did mean with a view to chaining the bike to a static object for security- sorry, should have made that clearer! Embarassed

the problem is that I live in a narrow street of terraced houses making parking a nightmare especially as many homes have more than one car so I often find myself parking my car in another road. If I had my way I would have cones outside my house and yes, what a good idea, a bloody great concrete block too for my little bike!!

I cannot stress the importance of the disc lock reminder cable. Do not use a disc lock without one.

Parking up in a very public place wouldn't make a difference. I sat for an hour and a half with a mate jr hacksawing my disc lock off after I rode off with it, bending the lock so it couldn't be opened.

Hundreds of people walked past and none of them showed the slightest interest. Maybe they were worried I stabbed them or something, but I was a bit disappointed that no one phoned the police.

That's the trouble- people don't want to get involved nowadays. People bury their heads in the sand.
If someone is gonna thieve a bike then they will find a way. Look at what HellKat said- she couldn't have done more.
