In my youth I worked in a bar in Bournemouth. I was a student at the time, and had bleached hair and a somewhat esoteric dress sense... Just after I'd done my hair, I walked into work and my (65 year old) manager exclaimed 'fuckin' hell its swampy'.

It took another 10 years before my mates realised that I was swampy from Pompey which added extra gravitas to the nick...

Unfortunately I'm all pseudo middle class now with a sensible haircut, and more restrained fashion sense... but the name has stuck like shit to a blanket...
