I'm surprised no one has posted this up (that I can find anyway.)

The BBC wrote:

Charity offers UK drug addicts £200 to be sterilised.

Drug addicts across the UK are being offered money to be sterilised by an American charity.

Project Prevention is offering to pay £200 to any drug user in London, Glasgow, Bristol, Leicester and parts of Wales who agrees to be operated on.

The first person in the UK to accept the cash is drug addict "John" from Leicester who says he "should never be a father".

The move has been criticised by some drug charities who work with addicts.

etc

A lot of the lefty touchy feely sorts are decrying this as ain infringement on... I can't be bothered saying it.

Anyway, I advocated this on an involuntary basis for everyone at birth until they could demonstrate they had the financial and mental where-with-all to look after a child.

So what do you think?

Thumbs Up

Would you really trust the state with such a decision?

There are plenty of people who should be sterilised, who decides is the only issue I have with it.

I saw a flash of this on the TV the other day, I remember listening to a programme a year or so ago on Radio 4 one night about, presumably, this same American charity. It was based in California I think and was offering female drug addicts money to be sterilised. The charity organiser was getting grilled but she put up a good argument and I think it's a fairly good idea to be honest.

You could say it's taking advantage of people of unsound mind but then hard drug addicts pushing out babies is much worse. They interviewed a woman who had adopted kids from a drug addict, she ended up taking something like 5 or 6 kids as the woman just kept pushing them out, none of which she could even remotely look after.

This is going to be a difficult one?

Does someone who has a regular recreational smoke get classed as an addict?
The`re drug takers ? after all.

Who defines the line between regular users and addicts, and who decides who makes those rules?

Do we gas anybody who has commited a crime to fund thier drug habit (have to admit, that one is a bit appealing).

where does this stop?

What about vesectomies for people who have fathered abnormal babies?.
What about hysterectomies & versectomies for the mentally unwell?.

Good job I`m not a mentally ill, drug taking , father of two Shocked .

Tricky one this.

From a societal point of view, it may reduce the numbers of problem people in the future. Like many people, I'd guess that a lot of addicts are not in control of their own lives, so not capable of controlling a childs life for good. However, not all addicts will be that way, and some will lose the plot for a bit and then sort themselves out. They only need to have lost the plot long enough to decide to take the money and do the deed, and they change their life forever. I think for some, the responsibility of having a child could be the push they need to sort themselves out.

From an individual point of view, I think its taking advantage of people in a vulnerable position, inducing them to make a decision that may be wrong for them long term. There is also the possibility that while now its voluntary with an incentive, if it gains acceptance, in the future, courts may insist on it for certain people. Thin end of the wedge type stuff.

It's eugenics by the back door. What next, offering euthenasia to anyone who is feeling suicidal ? Even if in a year or two their life may have picked up, but no chance of that if they are dead.

Noble aims, but consequences may be worse than the original problem.

I'd suggest an alternative, would be giving female addicts money to have a contraceptive implant (the sort that puts hormones into the body for 6 months). The only problem is the numbers wouldnt work. £200 sounds a lot to an addict, but its one payout, and does the job forever. Whereas 6 monthly implants, with a payment each time, would be more costly and the amount to the addict would look like chicken feed. Some might go for it though.

I work in the train station in our town and I'v seen the vermin that populate around here.
I didn't really notice them before I started work here. It's like your eyes don't see them as you walk down the road.
They are some of the most vile excuses for life you could imagine. I have absolutely zero pity for them.
For some insight-
There's one in particular regular that is currently 4 months pregnant (2nd child, 1st taken away by social), a few weeks ago she was so shit faced she could barely move unaided. A few days ago i saw her necking special brew in the station. Yesterday i kicked her and her boyfriend out of the toilets as they were prepping heroin.
This offer would be nothing but a good thing for those so far into an addiction that they have little more to live for than getting drugs/using drugs as there's no way they could possibly raise a child.
and so on...

My mum is a foster carer. She has three kids at the moment who had a fairly fucked up start to life, mostly from one of their dads, but their drugged up alky mum didn't help. The oldest, from being around his dad bringing underage girls back and touching them up in front of him has no 'incest inhibitor' and frequently puts his sister into sexual situations she really shouldn't be in (which in turn leads her to act very inapropriatley at school and other places)

The oldest had a proper IQ test the other day, tried his best and had a social worker with him the whole time. He got 5

It's not even like they where abused (though the girl probably would of been in a few years) or knocked about more than a little just neglect and put in very innapropriate situations for kids. But all three of them (this is a horrible thing to say, but it's true) will never have a life, they could never be anywhere near independant. All because of those first few years with the utter scum parents.

So yeah, I'm in favour

Another solution, I'd suggest is based on the idea that for addicts, they no longer get pleasure from using, and its just to number the emotional pain for their shit lives.

Normally, I dont advocate anti-depressant medications, as they are sold as 'cures' for 'illness' which they blatantly arent, they are to numb people to their shit lives. However in the case of addicts, I think they should be put on these modern pharmaceuticals that numb people from the emotional pain of life, without a lot of the negative consequences of illegal drugs. Of course you cant stop them using both, but at least it would make it easier to go without illegal drugs.

Yeah but sometimes people make bad decisions when they are emotionally vulnerable, which is why generally, its good practice to avoid asking people to make big decisions when they are in that situation.

If they are being offered an incentive to make a big long term decision, they may just think short term, with no thought to personal consequences.

Offer an addict £200 to have their eye removed, and they may well go for it, but this may be a bad choice for them, and so unethical to get them to make a bad choice for them.

you`re dead right, but where does the situation of an offer become the beginings of coersion?

I hate some of the filthy druggie scum that pollute my streets, but I still feel uneasy about the use of force/coersion to get a solution that suits me?

Yeah but you can turn this on it's head and say that making the choice to get knocked up when you can't even look after yourself is a terrible choice, with consequences that destroy peoples lives (the kids)

I see the sense in your 6 month idea, but having seen the results of this sort of peoples poor decisions for the last 5 years it's hard to stay impartial. and I normally take a very libertarian stance.

This is what I mean about thin end of the wedge. I'm sure that someone could give me examples of some individual who is horrible to their kids and has loads due to no contraception, and I'd think it was a good idea for them.

However this would open the door to sterilising anyone who wasnt approved of. Governments tend to expand on things year by year, "we have no plans to..." becomes next years policy, building step by step on the thin end of the wedge.

Before you know it, all labour voters may be sterilised, and although I think labour voters (myself included) are all personally responsible for the crimes of Tony Blair, I think sterilisation is a step too far.

I read this in the metro on the train to University.

I am not as desperate to give up my manhood and my family name in order to receive a measly 200 squid. However, This man desperately needs it, it seems and it will quickly be squandered. But it's his money and only he sees fit on how to spend it.

I got to know a girl over the net, who I never met, and we have stayed in touch over the years to a degree. When I first got to know her, she had a very chaotic lifestyle. Sleeping with random blokes, lots of drugs, bing drinking etc. She was someone who the contraceptive implant worked for, as a few times, she would forget to take the pill and get pregnant and have an abortion. The doctor wisely talked her into the implant, but I bet a lot of girls would just keep forgetting and keep having abortions as not many doctors would bother.

She eventually met someone who she got a proper relationship with, and at first she didnt cut out the drugs and binge drinking, when she was trying for a baby, thinking she could stop when she knew she was pregnant, so of course when she did get pregnant, she lost the baby, although I had suggested she stop doing stuff BEFORE she knew she was pregnant.

However now, she has cut out all the crap, and is a very proud mother of twins.

There are always the worst cases who you can assume will always be bad, but this thing would also affect a lot of people who are chaotic when they are younger, then grow up.

Your idea of who counts as an addict might be completely different to the person handing out the £200.

Maybe, we are too concerned with rights in our society, more than responsibilities, so we could make steps to change that, but without going to extreme measures that may have big consequences.

An example of the problems with this sort of thing are.

Saddam is a bad man, he does bad things, wouldnt it be great if we got rid of him and put someone nice where he was ? Sounds like a lovely idea, but it resulted in about a million deaths, far more than the nasty man was ever responsible for. Sometimes nice ideas which lead to extreme measure, have consequences that mean the cure was worse than the disease.

It`s not only about him, what about Big Brother using this as a way of control?
Far fetched? maybe? how many officials within govenment/Whitehall might look at that article and think to themselves "Hmmm, now theres a thing"

It's only a certain control as to not get unwanted children. Just like it's voluntary action that decides that a wife or husband have the snip after they have 2 or so children.

This country has over 60 million people in. We're the most densely populated country in the whole of Europe by DOUBLE that of the 2nd.

Blurredman... You`ll get no arguement from me that we need to reduce the number of people living in this country (all of the UK)

But is this the way to do it? administered by an organisation that thinks that they have some moral high ground.
They dont, and the fact that they "think" they have, proves that they are the wrong people to provide this service as they will/could possibly use this service to thier own ends and according to thier own opinions and/or like/dislike of individual people.
