I skim read through most of it but; the argument for this was about 1 person being a BAB, the person in question rode bikes say 15-20 years ago maybe, then last year (before Shaun passed his test I might add) he passed DAS.
A BAB is someone who passed their test 20 years ago and rode a 500cc caféé racer or whatever, then after 20 years goes and buys a R6 with the assumption that it's only 100cc's more so it won't be much quicker than the 500cc he had 20 years ago and doesn't get any training either.
The person (Shaun knows who I mean) who he is classing a BAB recently passed their test and had some level of training on a reasonably powerful bike (more than that of the one that Shaun rode on I might add too ) and is now legally riding a powerful bike (Unlike Shaun).
I would class him as a much safer bet than you, so what it was 20 years ago he rode a bike, he has been re-trained to test standard on a larger capacity machine than you did!

So, it wasn't long before and I didn't get any minors when I did pass if you want to go into details.

Anybody can ride a bigger bike on test standards at the speed limit everywhere.
None of that has anything to do with this thread, the only thing we were trying to establish is how many years before they are classed as a born again, what bike they are on and whether they are a safe rider in your opinion doesn't have anything to do with it, its how long they've been off the road. Helen is looking at it as though every time the term born again is used that it is negative comment to make towards someone which it isn't and yes Jimbo, we all know Helen has breasts so you'll come in here like the big man to try and impress her and save the day from the nasty person who disagree's with her, how sweet.

Statistics wouldn't say so, I don't see how this is even part of the argument though to be honest Jimbo, up until now I haven't even mentioned this person in question, ok Jay has but he was also told that its entirely different to this thread.
The only point that was trying to be put across was that he rode bikes 15-20 years ago, is now riding bikes again with the huge gap in between therefore making him a born again. |

How predictable Shaun, everything you have said I said you would the term BAB is a negative comment. You were in bed last night at about ten past 9 so I couldn't tell you then.
There is no set gap, everyone is different and yes he did ride years ago but BAB's are people who are coming back to biking with no training, not taking tests again and assuming they can handle the power .
Tarring everyone with the same brush is what insurance companies do, I'm sure you wouldn't like it if I tarred you with the same brush that every young lad is riding round illegally and you're reckless, own a too powerful bike than you can handle etc etc(because you are 100% legal and I know I'm the same age as you but I'm merely saying).
I was just merely agreeing with what she said, you weren't here so I put it in the thread, can you do anything about it no .

Hmmmm, I guess I would be a born again having gone through my Uni years without any vehicle, and then a couple of years afterwards without a bike . Was I a born again biker at the age of 24? And what difference would it have made if I was a BAB or a noob, although my circumstances don't realy quailfy me as a BAB as I still had to go through the whole CBT and full test anyway. ____________________ "Unlike public school you don't need to have your arse up and your head down to go a long way...." |

I definately agree with Bendy here.
I don't think there can be a true definition of a BAB, there are no tick boxes... It's more a question of attitude, generally BABs are seen as being bikers who have returned to biking and assume that becuase they 'used to ride bikes' are perfectly capable of handling a modern, more powerful machine without any training. ____________________ Avast! My Dad is a born again biker, definatley. His last bike was a Lambretta LI175 in about 1969, did his test 'round the block' on a honda 50.
About two years ago he decided he would buy a motorbike, turned up one day with a Classic KH350 triple. I have managed to persuade him that this is a stupid bike to try riding anywhere with his level of experience (KH350, insane 70s two stroke racing bike, tops out at 105mph with a razor thin powerband and the most bendy chassis you have ever experienced. Fun, but dangerous) and he now just takes it for a (very slow) bimble to the odd bike show, I feel duty-bound to take the thing out whenever I am home and rag the arse off it, just for decoke purposes you understand?
I suggested to him that as he is short, and rides fairly slowly, he would be better with a lardy cruiser. 650 Dragstar was forthcoming. To be honest he is as safe as anyone else on the road, he seldom goes over 55 on it and just bimbles round corners at small angles of lean. I have followed him and can't fault his riding style.
He had no idea what he was buying mind, and let himself be guided by me. It could just as easily have been that he decided he liked the look of a TL1000s, and without advice may well just have just gone out and bought one. Therein lies the problem.
So... a 34 year gap certainly makes you a BAB. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

It doesn't matter if he had training or not the fact of the matter is he used to ride a bike and now does again with a big break in between. You can't say that he rides safely as the person in question has only been seen riding by Helen twice, you can't judge someones riding by 2 very small glimpses of him, we all have our mad moments and do stuff that we shouldn't and I don't claim not to and I've had training too and passed with no minors, it doesn't mean I ride how I should do all the time.
If your going to throw stuff about me not being 100% legal into the equation Jimbo then lets talk about our journey up to cadwell, I believe you were a bit more on the illegal side than me, or did you forget about that?
You could say that I'm reckless if you like, several people have told me that I'm a sensible and cautious rider, however I aren't 100% of the time so I do have my reckless moments but who doesn't. |
