Following on from other painkiller-related threads...

I have gone back to the Doctor and expressed my loathing for Tramadol in it's uneffectiveness, she after much deliberation has amended my meds to:

Paracetamol
Amitriptyline
Diclofenac
Tramadol (for breakthrough pain, maybe oral morphine next visit)
12mcg/hour Fentanyl transdermal patches.

Has anyone had any experience with these transdermal patches? She said it's roughly equal to around 1.2mg IV morphine every hour. I will come back when it has kicked in as it has a lag period as it has to enter the fat cells first before it is distributed.

Apparently this is basicially the tippy-top of the painkiller pyramid, so I'm expecting good things!

Short of IV morphine, there is not much better for analgesia. Fentanyl is actually more potent than morphine, it just has a plasma half life measuerd in seconds which is why it needs to be delivered in a sustained release form.

Just remember, that stuff is the real-deal, schedule 2, full agonist opiate with everything that entails.

If you're sore enough to need it, fair enough, it's inconspicuous and should be pretty effective. Take it for as long as it's needed, stop when it's no longer needed. Review your meds regularly.

Stock up on the syrup of figs.

My god, is that the correct spelling of amitriptyline?

Only I constantly mis-spell it, so I have had to write (what I think is) the correct spelling on my wall in big pink letters ... and even all the doctors in my office are like "oh yeah, I need a sign like that".

Carlos, I have healed femurs (broke both) that are unioned with bilateral femoral nails and a wedged vertebrae in my neck and back thanks to breaking them. That's where the pain is coming from.

Hellkat. ! It took me a while to figure it out too, it's a pain of a word to spell but the drug itself is okay!

It's been 18 hours since I put the patch on and no real difference in noticeable pain yet, the Doctor said the first patch can take up to a day so I am holding out!
