Rollover Rideout

Today was a special day. Nice and sunny, bit cold too. I wheeled the ol’ rusting greasy lump out of the garage and fired her up. Headed off across town and out the other side. I rode through the small village of Rayne and onto the back roads to Duckend Green. The sun was still low and a bit blinding at times.

The road was empty of cars, nice and dry.

After riding through Great Saling, Jasper’s Green, Shalford Green, in fact more Greens than you could shake a stick at, I turned onto the narrow Woolpits Lane.

I saw something through a gap in the hedge and stopped to investigate. Animals in the field the other side of the hedge, seen suddenly, something not quite right. Don’t think these are native Essex fauna, no white socks for a start.

Turned onto a network of hardpacked greenlanes near Crow’s Green.

One lane had people living in it. I don’t like ‘dags’ so carried on past on the lane I was already on.

The last lane ended at the local airfield. This mound is an old aircraft parking area, earth built up to protect the planes from damage during bombing raids. It’s now used by a local shooting club who stuck a barn at one end.

The tarmac road runs alongside the grass runway with a ploughed field between.

I can see lots of small light aircraft and one ancient heavyweight fighter.

How the hell that managed to land on the short runway I have no idea.

Finally the reason today was a special day. I slowed down, stopping every so often to take these pictures of the mileometer.

wow, I'm actually in awe. Did you clock up most of those miles?

And I'm suprised the bike survived this long. I thought this was the stuff of legends.


And crikey those roads are beautiful. Makes me wish I lived in the countryside sometimes!

Nice story, well presented, I enjoyed reading that and seeing your pictures. I am surprised you can find such empty roads in SE England, I never can! The dirt roads you were on look very like those over here, though ours are in much worse condition. Possibly the reason why my neighbour has an Africa Twin as well.
