Do not like, nor want! There will be a CBR150 version available in Thailand and also a new VTR250 for Thailand and Canada.

Looks more VFR than CBR!

2011 VTR250 for those who havent seen it:

https://www.visordown.com/uploads/images/Large/13788.jpg

Reminds me of a Ducati Monster or a stylish Bandit, quite like that one.

Deffo a Monster clone. Good for someone who wants a 250 Monster-alike, otherwise, you can't beat the real thing. Wink

The VTR250 hasn't changed since the '97 version really. Nothing new, but they always were rare in the UK. Personally I'd love one as a town/short distance commuter/winter bike.

Here's the 1997 model:

https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery/Honda%20VTR250%2097%20%201.jpg

Barely different to the 2011 model pictured above.

The CBR250, however, really isn't a patch on it's defunct namesake:

If they made a modern IL4 250cc with mini-me 2008+ Fireblade styling, and an 18k redline (like the original), I bet they'd have the punters queueing up.

Apart from the messy, confused styling, I bet what they've made above is just a 'low' revving, plodding parallel twin a la the Ninja 250. Yawn..

I agree it looks more like a VFR than a CBR, but what drives me mad is mini-me bikes. I wouldn't want to see a CBR125/250 that looks just like a mini fireblade.

I like it when manufacturers design them to look different, such as R6/R1.

Maybe, until people saw the price of such a bike. Realistically it would cost about the same to build as a 600 supersport bike so need about the same sale price.

Main market they are aiming at is the 33hp license holders. Building something capable of much more is just adding a load of cost with no real benefit (same reason that Honda and Yamaha build little 4 stroke singles with no easy derestriction for the 11kW learner market).

All the best

New CBR250 is a single, VTR a twin.

A single? Even less of interest there then. Probably won't even make near 33bhp.

Styling wise, I kinda like it - apart from the abortion that is the exhaust.

i see no need for these kind of bikes in our market, i know the asian markets have different rules on licences, but why get this when a 600 is so much more for not a lot more cash?

Ninja 250R is a good point, an ER6 is only about £2,000 more, yet a much more capable machine.

Not having been round biking for so long, it's only just become apparent to me the lack of 250's. What happened!?! Are these likely to come to our shores? Or is the 250 Ninja pretty much it?

The VTR is going to be around £4000 and 29/30bhp. That seems a lot for very little although it's a pretty looking bike.

Aimed at the 25kW / 33hp market. Plenty of people don't want something restricted and are not worried about it not being the latest 600.

All the best

the cbr 125 is essentially a cb125 with a fairing on. Looks like the cbr250 is basically a cb250 with a fairing. Am i surprised? no. Disappointed? yes. I'd love a VT250, but chances of finding one for sale at a reasonable price isn't good.

if EU get their way, then in 2012 there'll be license restriction changes.

25+ for DAS
If you pass a restricted test while under 25, it will NOT automatically de-restrict from 33bhp, you MUST take the test on a large bike to get more than 33bhp when you're over 25.

So in 18 months time, the 250's could be quite popular I imagine, and they want their share of the market early.

It`s all about what price they can sell them for ...imho.

I`m sure there are a lot of riders out there who would love a mini-rocketship, I know I would Smile .

I dont always feel the need to be on the MOST POWERFUL thing I can afford, and i`m sure there are others out there that feel the same way.

I really hope that bike makers start waking up and putting more models on the market.
I think that the UK misses out on a lot of good bikes because short sighted bike manfactures/importers/dealers cant see beyond thier interpritation of our laws and what the biking press tell them.

I did seriously consider buying a Yamaha YBR 250 single as a run-around, until I lost my job.

Surely if we want the biking "scene" to flourish, we need lots of different types of bike on the market?
I think that, that little CBR 150r is a sexy little bike and theres room in my garage for one alongside the CBR 250r.

But as someone else said it`s all about price.
A little bit is also about our culture ie "biggest", "fastest", "trendyest"

Anyone know if the CBR250 is coming out in the UK next year. Any news / rumours that its coming to the UK? If its coming here, I might hold off till it arrives Surprised

Not really.

I'll not list the differrences but start with liquid cooling and work from there.

I believe the CBR125 is closer to the YBR125 than the CB?

Do you have loads of money you want to throw away for the sake of a new number plate?

If you don't, there are lots of better bikes out there for the money Smile.

SV650 with restrictor kit, old GPX250 (pretty much the same bike with older looking fairings for a 1/4 the price), BROS 400, DRZ400SM.
If you really want to spend that much, personally I'd get a real sports bike, restrict and down gear it. You actually get decent suspension and chassis for the money, plus you have a decent change when you end your restriction - more, it'll lose a lot less in depreciation.

Basically, buying a new bike is going to cost you a lot of money in depreciation. Only really seems worth while if you're getting something you can't get second hand (ie new model with even more power, light weight etc) or you have loads of money to splurge on effectively a newer number plate. In this case, second hand 33hp bikes have been around for a long time.

That would be harsh for people who have passed under the age, then got to take it again when there over 25 to go up. More cost involved if it's not already too much now. Hope this does not happen.

They already have. The 3rd European Directive on Driving Licenses is done and dusted. All that remains to be seen is how we'll implement it.

PhilDawson8270 wrote:

24, or 2 years after passing the new A2. The minimum age for sitting the new A2 is 18, but may (and I suspect will) be higher.

PhilDawson8270 wrote:

Yes, but forget 33bhp, that's going out of the window. The new categories will be (ignoring power to weight):

A1: 125cc and 11kW
A2: any engine size, <35kW (~47HP) but not a bike that generates 70kW+ (94HP) as stock.
A: Hayabusa!

Note carefully that none of the licenses upgrade. If you sit the new A1 test on a 125, you will only ever be allowed to ride 11kW 125s, same as the current A1 "light" license.

There will be no equivalent of the current "A (restricted)" where you sit a test on a 100kph+ 125 and then get access to bigger bikes restricted to 25kW. If you want to ride a 250 or even an unrestricted RS125, then you have to pass an A2 test.

PhilDawson8270 wrote:

Personally, I think the exact opposite will happen, because of the test machine categories.

To ride a 250, you'll first have to pass the new A2 test. You have to sit that test on a bike of at least 400cc and 25kW+. Can you think of any new road bikes being sold in the 400cc to 600cc range? I can't.

Because most engines are a few cc under their marketing displacement, we're realistically talking about "500cc" bikes like the ER-5, which are already getting long in the tooth.

The kicker is that the new A test requires a bike of at least 600cc and 40kW, so all those ~500cc (ER-5) and even "600cc" bikes like the CB600F (599cc!) will be defunct as trainers, regardless of how much power they generate. So training centres will have to upgrade their fleets to full 600cc bikes, which in practice means 650s.

The question is: will they keep any smaller bikes around just for A2 tests? It really depends on our interpretation. On the strictest reading, it might be that you can only train and test on a bike that's 400cc+ and strictly within the power range of 25kW (the minimum for the test) and 35kw (the maximum for A2).

However, it may be interpreted so that A2 training and testing can be done on any bike: certainly the test requirements just specify minimums.

Training schools will certainly be lobbying for "any bike". Why would they want to maintain a fleet of ER-5s and ER-6s? Far better for them if they can do A2 and A training on the same 650cc unrestricted 40kW+ bikes.

And after you've done your A2 training and test on an 200kg+ full power 650, or at a minimum a 500cc ER-5, are you really going to go out and get yourself a dinky 250? All that expensive big-bike training just to get on a YBR 250? Really?

Why not just get yourself the sort of 650 that you're already comfortable on, restrict it to 35kW (still significantly more than the current 25kW restriction), ride it for 2 years, then go and do refresher lesson and then sit the A test - likely on the same bike you sat the A2 on! - and whip the restrictor out of your 650?

Or you might even think "Forget this, I'll just skip the whole farce, wait until I'm 24 and do DAS". That's going to be a blow to training centres, as they lose 3 years of potential DAS trainees in one big lump.

I should be clear, I love small capacity bikes, and I want to see more of them around. But I think the market for anything in the 150-600cc range is going to collapse, not grow.

We'll have 125cc commuters and scooters, a reduced group of 650cc+ riders, and very little in between. Training centres are going to take a beating as well, and that concerns me - they're few and far between as it is.

If anyone disagrees with this assessment, then I'd really appreciate knowing the reasoning behind it. I just can't figure out how the new A2 category is going to do anything but push people onto bigger bikes, while ensuring that fewer people get into biking to begin with. Confused
