So I got a parking ticket this morning Evil or Very Mad

I live in Islington, London, where parking on the pavement is illegal but most bikers do it cause if you park in the road some twat invariably knocks your bike over or nicks it cause there's nothing to lock to. How do we get round parking tickets? Most people put a plastic bag over their number plate (as I do). So my question is... how did they get my reg number to issue the ticket? You can't read my tax disc so that's out and therefore they must have removed the bag. Is it illegal to tamper with a parked vehicle? I thought so which is why I have used the bag method...

Any thoughts? Can I appeal? Any lawyers out there who can clarify the situation for me? £50 is way too much for me to have to pay just because I am worried about the security and safety of mu bike...

Any help/advice appreciated

As far as I am aware, Traffic Wardens cannot touch your vehicle to look at your plate, but the police can. In fact if you block your plate deliberately, it constitutes obstructing an officer in his/her duty.

I think the covering the plate loophole is a real grey area. If your bike has a centrestand, and you can demonstrate that it can rest on this without either wheel touching the ground, they cannot give you a ticket. I know there is a company that can make this adjustments, but couldn't begin to think of their name. Prehaps a clever Google is in order?

Good luck defying the buggers! Thumbs Up

I too have heard of this legal loophole. Provided none of your wheels are in direct contact with the ground/floor, they are not authorised to issue you with a ticket. I was told this by a courier when i was shopping in China Town, where parking space is a premium. Does that mean that if you put a wooden wedge between your rear or front tarmac and the ground, would that make you safe? Any replies would be appreciated as i would love to piss of the wardens. Oh, great idea. Use a disk lock and attach it to the Bastard's peds, usually a Yam B-whizz or something or other.

Just to say that 2 weeks ago i and 3 friends got a ticket for not pay and displaying. We all just appealed and said there is no way to put a ticket on the bike because it can be taken easily or fall off due to the weather. Three days later we all got away with it. This wasn't in london though so they might be stricter than in Somerset. Plus its totally different to your situation but still I beat the wardens !!!!!!!!!! haha Laughing

This thing about not being able to remove anything covering up a number plate is hogwash and an old wifes tale. It is perfectly legal for a Police officer or other authorised person to take whatever steps are reasonable to obtain the identity of a vehicle providing no damage is caused, and if that requires the removal of a bag or something that is covering up the registration mark, then not only is it legal but perfectly acceptable.

The only way you can legally get around a parking ticket is checking the regulations (held at your local library) with those in force at the location, so this would include checking signs, measuring where the order starts to where it finishes, making sure that there are termination lines and so on, and then fight it on those grounds which in most areas will not be a problem (Reading is a good example where I always park in a restricted zone knowing they cannot do me) simply because the regulations in force are out of sinc with what is actually in existaence at the location.

All regulations also include the footpath, and there is the option of doing the rider for obstruction and having it towed away, or if the problem continues arresting the rider for wilfull obstruction!
