Hi all - got my Mod 2 on Tuesday next week and I have a question I'd like to ask you all.

Firstly though - a big thanks to all the people who have posted replies to previous questions. I have found them to be an invaluable source of excellent information - thank you so much Very Happy

Scenario - 3 lane A road with someone hogging the middle lane. Let's say he's doing 55 in the middle lane. If he's doing less than the speed limit in the middle lane do I have the option of undertaking him or to get past him would i need to go from slow lane > middle lane > fast lane etc? Or would the best option be to stay behind the middle lane hogger albeit in the slow lane.

My thought would be to overtake him after doing all the necessary checks but just want to check if that would be considered wrong on the test?

Thoughts please guys.

That. In a nutshell.

If the road is 3 lane and the speed limit is national speed limit which on a road with 2 lanes or more is 70mph there is a good chance that you will be given a minor for not being aware of the speed limit. Best thing to do is put out with plenty of time, Remembering to indicate and shoulder / mirror checks and overtake him. Never undertake him as its illegal and you will get a serious for it.

I agree. It's not undertaking if your lane moves quicker than the middle or outside lane as long as you don't switch into the middle/third lane after accelerating to the right speed. You'll get a minor for not making progress especially if you're on a 500cc, you may get a little leeway if your on a 125cc.

Remember your obs, what if's, stop lines, and road positioning especially when making turns (a guy who tested before me got a major for not going over far enough on a right turn out of a one way, examiner said what if a car came up on your inside..) and also remember if you make a mistake it may only be a minor and you're allowed up to 10 of those spread across the board.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have a few other questions which have entered my head:

I've watched a few videos on Youtube and its been suggested that when I stop at traffic lights I should put the bike into neutral. I commute into London each day and have got into the habit of keeping the bike in 1st and covering the back brake. I know covering the back brake is whats needed but I didn't know examiners are expecting me to be in neutral at every set of lights. Is this really necessary to put it in neutral when stopped?

Secondly, on the video's I've been watching, they refer to right hand life savers when pulling off. Is it only a RH life saver which is required when pulling off. I've taught myself to do both L&R lifesavers before moving off - is this overkill? Are they expecting right only when moving from a stationery position?

Its not actually illegal, but it would be classed as dangerous driving/driving without due care if done in a reckless manner.

The highway code stipulates that when in a lane you are expected to keep up with the flow of traffic in that lane.

It also says that if adjacent lanes are slow due to traffic conditions you are expected to still maintain the flow of traffic in your lane.

Would I use that as a defence on my test? er.. no. I'd overtake Smile

The youtube vids you've watched are the "learn2ride" ones? The lifesavers in those vids are all wrong imo.

When stopping, you do whatever is comfortable for you. So long as you remain in control of the bike. If its going to be a while, change into neutral on one or two of the lights just to demonstrate that you "can" do it if you wanted.

When moving off:
-- Red Light
-- Yellow Light
Left Mirror, Right Mirror.
--Green Light
Left shoulder, Right shoulder.
Move.

Don't forget that moving off is seperate to turning so be prepared to do another life saver before committing to a turn after a traffic light.

You're turning right..
--Right Signal On at some point...
--Red Light
--Yellow Light
Left Mirror, Right Mirror.
--Green Light
Left shoulder, Right shoulder.
Move forward
LIFESAVER
turn.

Ooh yeah - just passed Mod 2. Yippee!! Smile

I've read people on here saying its a great feeling and they aint wrong. Went the wrong way twice but was told that's ok as long as you go the wrong way safely Smile
