wheel/tyre size question

Evening.

My dad's on about taking the brand new (but old, only done 50miles before bike got sorn'd) tyre off my VFR (I don't want the tyre as I'll be buying some new ones when I finally get it sorted as I don't rate the tyre on it - Avon Storms).

The question is, the VFR tyre is 170/60 on a 17" wheel.

He owns a Kawasaki Ninja ZX9R (C2 Model) which has a tyre 180/55 on a 17" wheel.


Would there be any issues as to why the tyre would be bad for the bike? Handling issues or would it not even fit?

You'd probably find the wheel width is a bit different, but it'd most likely fit.

course this may change the profile slightly and casue him to notice a difference as far as handling is concerned, perhaps not so much an issue if just pottering about, more so if trying to get knee down round every RB.

TBH, he may be better selling it as part worn on ebay or similar and buying the size recommended by the manufafcturere if you arent sure.

one size down shouldnt be too much of an issue ive gone 1 size up and down many atime with no rea\l problems didnt affect the handling as such

As above, one size is generally ok, but two can cause problems.
My E model ZX9R is designed to take a 190, so worth double checking yours is meant for a 180.

Tis totally stock C2 ZX9R so the rim should be standard 180/55 (got the number from here clicky)

Although googling it, a few people have said the E model onwards is better with a 190 tyre on it and the C2 is a 180.

ZX9R B1-4 = 1994/1997, 120/70 ZR17 Front, 180/55 ZR17 Rear.
ZX9R C1-2 = 1998/1999, 120/70 ZR17 Front, 180/55 ZR17 Rear.
ZX9R E1-2 = 2000/2001, 120/70 ZR17 Front, 190/50 ZR17 Rear.



I'm thinking it should be fine.

Sorry, but you are saying you don't like a tyre after 50 miles...... Shocked You have barely managed to scratch the surface of the tyre.... So how can you tell, just how good they are....

You need to get more miles on it, to have a idea of how good they really are. Thumbs Up And they are a good tyre Karma

Even similar width tyres can have different handling specially on the front.
Profile and belting affects handling.

But it's maybe an extravagance to swap out after 50 miles. Very Happy

Could have easily had 47 miles of decent 'testing', which is probably more than most magazines do to theirs.

Or, just possibly, he's used the tyre some where else.

Or mores sensibly, he say a large red 'Danger' rather than the word 'Avon' and decided to get a good tyre, plus he would like his inheritance early Razz.

My dad originally got the tyre on the bike before I bought it off him, he did quite a bit of touring and plans to on his Ninja (not sure how... not comfy at all!) and that's why he bought the tyres in the first place (ideal touring tyre apparantly). I want more of a 'sport' tyre, and have had a few goes on a friends VFR800FI with dunlop pilot road 2's on, and also when he had some pirelli angel st's on it both felt nicer and more confidence inspiring than the Avons.

Sadly, his will hasn't been made yet. But I do know he has a £100k life insurance policy should he have an 'accident' whilst on a motorcycle or in a car... Shifty
