Do all greyhounds have that muscular build, or just ex/racing ones? Very nice looking dog.

Thanks, also my favorite pic.

Tis actually a female greyhound, physically very small compared to most greyhounds I've seen but amazingly fast. She won a lot of races before being recently retired.

I think they are more muscular than ones that havent raced, but also naturally very muscular and no body fat.

No they don't get fat due to their naturally fast metabolism.

You dont see the puppies as they are bred for racing and spent the first 5 years of their life racing and living in cages.

beautiful dog. I have a greyhound cross wippet, also with a little of something else chucked in there. She is a great dog, although being 7 and having a heart murmur she is still a lively little dog. Parents have thought about a retired greyhound but our dogs to violent to others so it cant be done unfortunately.

Well done on getting a retired greyhound though, they usually dont get a good life during there racing years or after so nice one Karma Thumbs Up

We've had six rescue greys, got three at the moment, beautiful dogs.

greyhound facts.

they are the only animals exempt from the animal welfare act, ie not illegal to mistreat them.

they are recognised as the oldest breed of domesticated dog.

other breeds DNA can be traced back to wolves, greyhounds DNA cannot be traced back as it is different.

greyhounds can not be given blood transfusions from other breeds, although greyhounds blood is used widely for other dogs.

David Smith, a builder from Seaham, county durham, is estimated to have killed over 10,000 healthy (but unwanted) greyhounds on his property.
He did nothing illegal in killing the dogs (£10 per dog). he was prosecuted by the environment agency as his only crime was unauthorised disposal of controlled waste (the corpses of dogs). he buried the dogs in lime filled pits on his land.

Just a generalisation, your dog might be different but sight hounds, particularly those trained to race can be a little bit risky off the lead in a public place. They will chase and attempt to kill any small fluffy thing that moves, including small dogs. Ours would go after rabbits that were a good few hundred metres away and they don't give up easily.

This one does not kill small dogs, she will kill squirrels and rabbits at will though. She is very good with other dogs, in fact she has no interest in them at all but is obsessed with squirrels.

Most of the time the squirrlels make it up a tree before she gets them but about once or twice a year she gets one.

(Sorry, just the eyes).
I used to have a rescue Greyhound, he had been through 3 other owners and a different name for each family, poor sod!
We called him Spike, as we had a lurcher named Willow Neutral from a puppy..
Spike was a brindle color but quite dull and malnourished when we took care of him at the age of 4,
Also having quite a temperament probably down to a funny history with past owners and other dogs.

Apart from managing to break his leg after having him only 8 weeks
(he caught it in a badger hole whilst running on the local common) he was soon back to full color and health.
The thing I remember is that he was very sedate and elegant, a gorgeous dog but he would only be fussed on his terms..
He'd go and sit on someones lap or jump on the sofas and slouch onto people without taking into account his own size
But if you would try to sit next to him when he wasn't in the mood then he'd bare his teeth and growl in a most menacing way. Laughing

Also, oddly, I remember that one of his strangest quirks was avoidance of red tiles..
I don't know what is was about them but at least he couldn't come and scav at the kitchen table as the floor is tiled red Razz
He'd just wait at the entrance to the kitchen poking his head around the arch. Laughing
Over the years his trust in people and behavior around other dogs was improving, but tragically at the age of 7,
and just as I began to feel really bonded he was hit by a car at the local common and had to be put down the next day Crying or Very sad.
I still miss him every time I remember, Greyhounds and Lurchers are wonderful dogs each very much full of unique character. Thumbs Up

I'm sure I either read or watch tv about them making great pets and not needing to be walked as much as people would think. I personally don't like the look of them, but I would never do one any harm.

They don't need a lot of exercise and they rarely run anywhere. Older ones can be hard to train, especially since you have to teach them to recall to a name that means nothing to them. The biggest problem we have had with rehoming was that they were food obsessed and emotionally weak. One cried every night for two weeks despite being kept with other dogs and would take food from the bin.

We had to return one dog after three days when he ran and jumped at my wife and our lurcher bitch decided to defend her and attacked him. Other than that they make great pets, all the ones we had were very good on the lead.

We only had problems with the first one we got. But he'd been re homed with two other familys that had taken him back.
He was very nervous, and would back away into a corner, any approach after that resulted in him baring his teeth and growling. Obviously he had been badly treated somewhere down the line.

Stupid sister in law tried to approach him (despite being told to leave him alone) result was she said she wouldn't come back to visit till we got rid of the dog, she didn't take it too well when I said "bye then, been nice knowing you"

It took the best part of a year to sort the dog out, and get him relaxed and settled. It was the most rewarding experience though.

i have a Lurcher as well, greyhound crossed with a border collie..

i think hes pretty much the perfect family pet, hes laid back in the house loves a cuddle, well behaved off the lead ( a bit of a monster on it at first),

hes chuffing quick though and as others have said, any small furry rodents, ( Rabbits squirrell's and even rats ), are fair game to him, and if he see's one he will catch it, as thats whats in his blood lines, that said most of the ones round here are used to dogs and run when the see one.

This is Jack... ages 20 weeks

dont actually have any recent pics on my pc,
