Ok parts will be easier to source and maybe less likely to fail compared to say...my bikes Smile But all that extra weight on the suspension/mounts/frame. Disaster must follow. Laughing

Why Not?
125's are not 'toy' motorbikes that should ONLY be used by provisional licence holders and confined to roads within a few miles of thier normal home.
Ironically, a lot of little bikes actually crank up higher mileages, tottling back anf forth accross town as every day transport than many big-bikes do, used only for fun when the weathers good.
For a long distance Expedition, lot of sense to choosing a little bike, especially if ridiung solo.
Bikes designed to take rider and passenger, so rider & luggage needn't over load it. Luggage spread about and secured neatly, as bike in pic, shouldn't too adversely effect the balence or handling, which as a tiddler isn't all that inspiring anyway, so who cares. extra weight might actually make it a tad more comfy!
Then you get to the MAJOR advantage of a tiddler over a big grand tourer.... cost!
Commuters run for thousands of miles on minimal maintenence, & when it does demand any, theres not much to do. Tyres often outlast the bike, and you can go a long way on a cheap tanks fill of fuel. Makes a LOT of sense actually....
You might not get anywhere in much of a hurry, but then not much point in going touring if all you pass along the way is a blur of scenary and the inside of a truck stop now and then!
And it may not be AS comfy as a bigger bike... but then could still be comfy enough... certainly far more appealing a prospect to me than trying to cramp myself into a coach class seat on an air-liner for a few hours!
Why not!
But then maybe I'll change my opinion next year....... Snowie, when she's finished rebuilding her CB125 Super-Dream, and got her test, wants to take a week or so and tour Ireland on it..... she wants me to come along on the DT! Not SO sure about that one, maybe one of the other CB125's..... but hey, we'll see.
Speed Limits, country roads, beutiful scenary, just sit back, get in the groove and enjoy! And if its a little bum-numming..... well.... gives an excuse to find a convenient local hostelry and use some of the money saved on fuel to sample the Liffy-Water, doesn't it?

Its not how much on the bike. Its how much stuff in general is on there. You don't need that much stuff.

Being a largish bloke anyway (16&1/2 stone) I chickened out of taking the CG touring this year.
I confined her to doing local runs and errands.

It`s a great little bike, but I came to think that me + a load of gear would just be to much for the poor little CG??

I`m thinking to myself that if I weighed 6/stone less than I do, the mighty CG might of coped.
I still want to go Tiddler-Touring, but I`m not sure on what bike to get/use.
I have ideas about a MZ ts250 Smile for next year, but is that still Tiddler-Touring?.
Mr Stinky did a tour on an Enfield 350....... does that count?
I think it does myself as I think that any touring on a bike with less than 400cc is still Tiddler-Touring.

What do you lot think?

I went to Wales on my TZR, it didn't feel like 'Tiddler-Touring' because I could easily do motorway speeds and some.

That`s good, Thumbs Up

If you had of had a bigger bike with more cc`s and a larger seat/frame/pannier space, would`nt it have been just that bit to easy??
Was`nt it more of a challenge because you were on a smaller bike?.

Dont get me wrong, I would love to do a tour on a large/stronger/faster bike as much as anybody else, but somethimes I find that half the challenge is missing because big modern bikes are just so darned good & efficient at what they do.

Not really. I would have liked the luxury of a rack/topbox, but it was fine. No aches or pains, very enjoyable and I never once felt like the bike wasn't quick enough.

Lol! that evokes some memories.... particularly the black-bags and bungees!

When I was at Uni, I had an AR125. If I wanted to go anywhere, it was that or Shank's! Loaded up, black-bags & bungees! Colledge books ejected from sportsbag stuffed with cloths, slung on my shoulder.... thought little about 2-3oo mile trips to get places. I was at Manchester, & had mates at Bristol and Plymouth, so heading down there just for the week-end wasn't uncommon!

Sure that theres a statute of limitations thats passed now, so can say this in safety, but would pull the L-Plate and take the M6/M5, as I wasn't so much interested in the scenary as the beer at the end, and got rather good at slip-streaming the trucks to save petrol! Could do the run there AND back pretty much on a tankful, to save beer money!

A LITTLE older, wiser and ritcher after Uni, I treated myself to the VF-Thou, and the black-bags and bungees gave way to propper throw-overs, tank back and tote, before they were in turn banished in favour of a pair of 46l hard-paniers and rack for a trip to the Island for the full two weeks. Oh, BLISS!

Still remember, wondering why I had EVER fucked about with black-bags and bungees, stopping to adjust the load, or find out what that funny flapping noise (Sports bag working its way round into the back wheel!) was! shear delight of just packing a suot case, clipping it on the bike & using a cargo net to hold down bed-roll and tent on the rack.... oh, and the comfort of a very big, very lazy motorbike that would as happily bimble about at 50, as it would stomp up to 150 to fast forward through the boring bits.....

when I got the CB750, had to re-evaluate. The Rack I'd had on the VF wouldn't fit, and when I came to do some rallies on it, was back to the throw-overs and tank-bag. After the ease of hard-luggage on the VF making everything so easy, I also realised how BORING it made it! The back-bags and bungees improvisation all adds to the fun!

I'm not too sure about that. I'm of the 'old-school'. Light-weight is up to 225cc, middleweight 225-375, heavyweight anything up from that. So to ME a tiddler would be anything under 225cc.

But, perceptions have changed, and bikes have grown bigger. when I was a kid, a 650 was a 'BIG' bike, and people look at 500 twins as 'small' ecconomy commuters, and now fullfil the role that used to be done by things like the old Honda CB200 'Benley'.

However, I think that getting with the spirit of the thing, still ought to be a true, sub 225 'Tittler'

ms51ves3 wrote:

Hmmmm as a DT owner, I think that would be VERY circumstance dependent! My DT125, the old air-cooled one, that one MIGHT make it, provided I got it built right and didn't nip it up at any point through a fault in that bloody oil pump or making it labour flat out at 60 for too long...... but pretty sure that the later Water-Cooled motors actually have a 20K service life on the piston.... provided the motors not been muggered with, and that darn oil pump doesn't throw a hissy, or the rad get clogged, or the water pump......

Snowie still reckons that if we take the little sejourn round Ireland she wants, I ought to take the DT. Its a pre-restriction model so has a WOPPING 14bhp! Though still only good for about 60-65mph. And it does have a big squdgy seat and soft long travel suspension, but I'm 'sanguine' about it.... Theres NO-WHERE to bungee any bin-bags! (Thats my excuse and I';m sticking to it!)

I bought a pretty smart late model CB125 Super-Dream that needed a top end rebuild, cheap, for Snowie to use as a 'Rider' while she did the rebuild on her project bike..... she's never used it, so its sat there looking a LOT more appealing than the DT.

Though there's also the 'scrap-heap', which is all the spare bits of CB125 that I've accumulated fixing up her bike, and the one we broke. Amongst that is a pretty solid frame and good rear suspension linkage and enough bits to build a complete bike, apart from engine..... been looking at CB/CD200 motors on e-bay, and contemplatng building a dedicated "Touring-Tidler"... still under 225cc!

But I suspect that if I do that, Snowie will just tease me and tell me that I might as well wimp out completely and use the 750..... So I am undecided, and if we DO do this trip, it is becouse Snowie has NEVER done any touring....

(She's only ever been out of Leiceter a handful of times, and three of them were our Holiday in Wales this year, the trip down to Kent to collect one of the project bikes, and the one to Wiltshire to get the one I thought she could use as a 'rider'! Seriousely, I live 20miles from her, and unbenownst to me, she actually went and bought a Sat-Nav so she wouldn't get lost the first time she came over!)

So she's never done the improvisation bit as a younster, while for me, its supposed to be a bit of going back to 'roots' and re-living forgoten youth.... That is often a peculiarly BAD idea... I KNOW its a bad idea.... every time you do something like that, and HAVE to experience somethiung 'in full' without the benefit of time tinted spex... it hurts! And you realise that youth provides a certain 'resiliance' (Especially to the after effects of alchohol!)... BUT... maybe thats what us old crones NEED from time to time, so we can apreciate the wisdom age brings better!

Honda actually designed the CG125 on the basis that it would be thrashed to within an inch of its life, whilst carrying its own weight again, plus family (paraphrased slightly!).

Honda's spiel on the design/history

The circumference of the earth is about 25K miles.

Now try driving round it, and adding hills and corners into the equation.. grinding through baking deserts, icy tundra, thin mountain air, damp tropical forrests on any mixture of good made roads through gravel tracks to ourtight dirt tracks....

SOME-HOW I dont quite see how that can be compared to hooning about the South-East-Midlands, generally neglecting your bike, running it ever further into the ground!

Coincidently I've just posted this pic in the 'waterproof kit' thread, but this was the little 250cc Serow packed up for an off-road trip of 2150 miles across Spain and back through France earlier this year.

https://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr344/Tonkatoo_2008/Ex%20Euro%20Trail/IMGP0276.jpg

If I was doing a RTW trip I'd have a slightly different selection of kit - more tools/spares, but essentially everything else would be the same, so no need for loads of extra luggage.

If you google Lois Pryce you'll find that she has done a fair few miles on her little 225 Serow and had no issues. In fact I've spoken with Austin Vince who has done RTW twice on the DR350 has said he sees no reason why the newer 250 Serow wouldn't be perfect for such a trip.

The only thing I found a bit of a pain was the road mileage trying to keep up with DRZ400 (all the others had DRZs) - it might have been down to confidence, but I wasn't happy at over 50mph fully loaded; too much knobbly tyre wobble for me to feel at ease!
