I fancy a change...Supermoto

Hey guys.

I've always liked sports bikes, felt like they were the bike for me and I just love the way they look.

But I can across an Aprilia MX125 on ebay, supermoto wheels... it just looked fantastic.
So I kept looking for SM's.. found a Blata 125 aswell.
Ive also seen a few SM DT125's.

Only reason I want to stick with 125 is because I want a bike small enough for my mates to ride when they inevitably get stolen and because its a fairly cheap commute

Can anyone recommend a 125, if its just an offroad styled DT how hard is it to convert to an SM?

Just wanting to do something a bit different to the mass of plastic between my legs!

You won't really be getting the 'supermoto' experience with a road 125. The competition ones more so, but they're fairly illegal for CBTers to ride technically and are a poor choice for daily riding.

I suggest you point your mates to the test centre .

Welcome to have a go on my KTM144 when I get my SM wheels back - it's actually registered as a 125, too - but as I say, while it has lots of power for the size, low weight and good suspension, it's probably not ideal for your needs.

I would go for the Aprilia or similar personally, rather than the DT; better engine for road work (note they did come SM trim from the factory too.)

Well the 125 is just the cheapest way given the silly car I have. A cheaper commute on small A roads is great on a 125.

Is the ktm the 2 stroke big bored? Is that road legal?!

So if it was a choice dt or mx, the mx would be the winner?

And I've had a look at the new 4t ktm. I don't really want a 'new' bike as i find them massively over priced!

Aprilia, Hmm bit highly strung for me, KTM's, Hmm another one highly strung which don't last too long. Why look at the CRF's or XR. You can change the tyres to suit. They look good with both on and off road tyres on.

Reading the OP's post i think he is more after a street/fun moto bike than what you might classify as a serious supermoto that is close to a competition derived machine.

G is right that a fun moto or converted trail bike won't give you the same experience as a much more serious tool would, but arguably if your not trying to get as much performance and ability for your cash as possible, then a converted traile or a bike like a DTX, WR125F, MX125 or DR125SM etc would all offer the style of a supermoto, and better handling than a trailbike with their off road suited wheel and tyre sizes.

I'm not after a proper supermoto myself, and there is nothing wrong with that, as for some peope that is all they need. My bike won't be much more than a KMX with 17" rims, and re-built firmed up forks, a better longer rear shock and uprated brakes. It will do the job for what i want however just fine.

Looked up the KTM125SX... that looks AWESOME.. and if it had road tyres like the WR125X... that would be PERFECT!

Paddy: supermoto wheels slot straight in to the KTM series.
Need a different spacer for the front brake and that's about it.
However, they are definitely not 'daily' bikes as most would see it.

Think Husaberg 650s are the bargain big bike I'd choose for such duties - seen an 07 model with both sets of wheels going for £2700!
It's based on the 450 and doesn't really have any more weight, but a decent chunk more power and a hell of a lot more midrange.

If you're ever down this way and I have the SM wheels around, feel free to grab a go on my 300! Just over 100kg, 300cc 2 stroke making a claimed 50hp (reality is probably a bit less, but lots of low and mid range go).
Haven't tried it with SM wheels yet, but suspect it should be as rapid as is needed on tight routes .

That's the competition enduro spec version, rather than the motocross version. Not really a 'road version.
The lights are more because they are required for various endurance races than actually for useful road use.

To some degree. Give a KTM dealer a few extra quid and they'll no doubt sell you a new 125SX as road legal (mine is road legal with standard KTM lights).

In days gone by enduros were completed on fairly lightly modified road models. The riders had to do all maintenance themselves and had to show they certain things such as lights still worked through out the race - it was a show case of the bike's hardiness.

These days, the bikes much closer to a motocross bike than most road bikes - things like the lights are more of a formality for 'proper' enduro use than for road legality.

Your Husky link is a specific SM version, though again there's actually only pretty minor changes between that and the enduro version (forget if they do a mx version too.)

It didn't sell on ebay (I didn't want to pay that much). Really liking it for enduro.
