I think I've asked something similar before but didn't investigate it fully as I changed my mind at the time!

Anyway, I was about to buy a ktm adventure but starting to think i'd be paying way over the odds for what I'm gonna use the bike for, I probably won't use it off road much as I have an off road bike for that... Problem is there's not many bikes i actually like!

I do like the tuono though! I need an upright bike as my backs not cut out for sports bikes Laughing and my riding style and plans suit an upright bike.

What's the tuono like on Fuel and how many miles to a tank etc? I plan more touring trips and anything less than about 120 or so to a tank is going to piss me off.

Anyone got one in the south i can have a go on? Hehe

I originally considered the falco but even that looks a bit of a sports orientated riding position, would much prefer renthal style wide bars like the tuono!

By the way, looking at the 03/04 mark for around £3k. Seems a few nice ones about in that bracket at the minute.

It's not all that upright...unless the model I've been looking at is different from what you have. The Mana 850 is a more upright machine...I know, these bikes are what I've been looking at a lot over the last few months.

My friend has one of the two...I need to find out which, and whether he'd be up for a stranger to ride it, I have no idea. I could ask. But he lives out East.

That said, you might find someone has one a lot closer to home.

I like um!

At 6'5, they suit me quite well. I like the fact its a Millie with bars and not a toned down sportsbike.

They are upright.

Alternative you could look at, is getting the sportsbike of your choice and fitting bars to it yourself. Thats what i did with my ZX6.

You can also get bar risers for the Tuono. You might want to have a nose around on Tuonozone Thumbs Up

Had a faired sv before, really don't like them

To be honest, budget aside, there's not many bikes I'm all that keen on! I test rode the new multistrada, that's nice but a bit out of budget hehehe

The older Numptystrada 1000's are quite cheap if you like them?

I had to get rid of mine because there is still too much pressure on my lower back / pelvis. And that was with bar risers.

Oh no. And I meant 650s but thinking about it maybe the sv650n would be more suited. It is unfaired and as far as I know a bit more toned down/upright bike.

Failing that I would guess at a fazer/bandit but I guess they are the same sort of thing.

Thought about a bigger supermoto or not your kind of thing?

Id think the Sv650 and Tuono wouldnt factor into the same choice to be fair. Having owned the suzuki and the RSV with the 1000cc v-twin the Tuono uses I can only imagine the SV as being an earth shattering disappointment!

Do I, Do It , Do It!
I moved from my ZX6R 07 as the smaller bike/riding position was killing my back.
Fair enough the the V60 engine is a thirsty beast .. check out tuonozone.com for riders opinions ... but a stonking machine.
Gobs of power from every gear, but a pussycat if ridden sensibly. Must do mods are dropping the front sprocket from a 16 to 15 to smooth out the lower end. A good aftermarket taller screen is a bonus.
Bad points - Italian build with all the bolts starting show rust but I dont care ... wouldnt change it for the world. Blag a test ride and you wont be disappointed Thumbs Up

Silver Owl has one, seem to remember him saying the tank range is shocking, certainly gets sub 100

Mine was unfaired. That said I am sporting injury and am a lot older than Sparks! So his idea of upright and my idea of upright may be based on totally different things.

Out of the two, Aprilia is a far sexier bike, albeit it has the same issues with corrosion with certain parts. Though I would imagine pricey too. It does carry the Italian name/brand.Idea

I know it's Italian and probably have the same issues, but Sparks! you should nip up and see Rick at Benelli in Southampton (ex manager of HG), the Benelli 880 semi faired is a gorgeous machine, changeable pegs and a moveable screen...It's very nice!!! Only £8k on the road brand new. It sounds amazing!!!

I have an 08 Tuono. Akra cans and set on map 2, with a smaller front sprocket. If I ride sedately I will get a return of about 110 miles to the tank, 120 on a very good day. 'everyday' riding sees about 100 miles to the tank, less if you cane it everywhere. That said they are a belting bike, I came from a K5 GSXR1000, cant compare them to be honest but I smile every bit as much on the Tuono, just for different reasons.

I have no idea what that means but okay!

As for tank range, if I'm looking at sub 120/130 then I think I'll just give it a miss if I'm honest! As much as I like the looks etc I just cant be arsed with short tank ranges. Might consider a TDM900... basically its gotta be an upright v-twin that looks good, the TDM isn't a massive looker but it's not the worst looking bike either... hmmm.

I recently bought a 2010 model, and absolutely love it. But a good friend of mine has the 2003-2005 Mille based model, and they're rather different, so you'd really need to try the generation you'd be buying if you wanted one.

But either way, and with the best will in the world, you're looking at a tank range of 85-115 to reserve, depending how hard you ride. In around 1000 miles of riding so far, I think the most I've seen before the fuel light came on was 103 miles, and I believe the first generation model is just as bad (if not slightly worse). Once the light comes on, you'll have about 4 litres and 30 miles of fuel remaining. So 120/130 miles is perfectly feasible, but you'd be silly to wait until your tank is very nearly drained before refilling.

I think you should get one.

Mainly because they look like this.

I've just sold my 03 RSV-R which shares the engine, and what an engine it is!! I actually prefer the looks of the older model (pre 2005). One thing to watch out for is the ridicules price for parts, if you thought the Japs were expensive, think again! I loved my RSV but will never buy another Aprilia due to the cost of spares. Saying that you can always just go through your insurance, in which case the cost doesn't matter too much as you wont be paying.

Hmmmmm I really can't be doing with 100 mile tank ranges, think I'm gonna look toward the TDM 900. Not as sexy but makes more sense for touring and long distance trips which is all i really have planned these days. Anyone got or had a TDM900 ? Thoughts and opinions?

KTM 990 SMT?

I moved from a kawasaki ZX10R to the 990SM (not SMT), up right and great fun engine, its really comfortable compared to the ZX10R, the SMT is designed to replace the SM as a multi purpose bike. If you plan on doing more tours than anything the SMT might be a good choice, there are lots of reviews. This video compares a few

Nah I was going to buy a 950 adventure but have decided to cut my budget down to about £3k as I have two bikes a sports car and only really use the main bike for touring and long trips so want something in that budget, reliable and good on Fuel but still fun and v twin. The v twin thing cuts the options down a lot really but I don't like online 4's as much Smile

It's pretty subjective, but IME you can only have two of those three, in so far as the most 'fun' V-twins tend to be the more highly tuned and/or higher capacity V-twins, and I can't think of a single one of those that can honestly be described as 'good on fuel'. Yes, an SV650 can be great fun, but as mentioned earlier, it doesn't bare comparison with something like the Tuono. The KTM Superduke has just as much of a drink problem, and although they're down tuned a little, I'd expect the SM/SMT models to be much the same. Though they will have a longer range due to more fuel capacity, but that hardly makes them 'good on fuel, it just makes it more expensive when you do fill up slightly less frequently.
