I feel ashamed to say that I've never actually lubed any of my bike chains... EVER... Embarassed
I really need to get into the habit of it and I will do once I replace my chain and sprockets as my chain is looking sorry and stretches every week... but my sprockets are okay (for now)
Cause if my rollers arestuck then there isnt much point lubing them is there? Or will they free up if I lube them? Embarassed considering I know so much theory about engines I feel so terrible that I never oiled my chains... I have neglected my babies. Sorry bcf.
Please don't hurt me...

OT: First of all change that oil and filters on that bike Razz

If it's winter i.e rain and grit. Then i clean and lube every other day. Maybe a quick clean n lube once a week during summertime.

I can see/feel when it needs attention.
Both my bikes have center stands, so takes <2mins to clean n lube.

I usually lube and clean mine every time I clean the bike, so about once a month or so.

I clean and lube mine about once a month as well, but I don't ride in crappy weather.

The manufacturers say that 'O' and 'X' ring chains don't need to be lubed, but I do it anyway, might be a waste of time and money, who knows Wink

How do you clean them without getting your hands dirty?

I do lube mine, I do ... I do ...! At least once every 10 days, or more often if it rains (its very easy to do if you put it on the centre stand and just let the engine run, you can just spray the lube on, while the wheel goes round and round)

... but its so gunky I can't bring myself to clean it.

But now I have started wrapping the chain back round the back tyre more regularly, I seem to be getting a lot of oily gunk on my hands lately.

Lube is so important guys, without it you can get into real trouble and it can get messy. Sometimes without lube, it will get stretched, which is not a good thing. You want it to last and be fairly tight for as long as possible. The stress it can give without lube is just unbearable and will cause a lot of damage.

Before, once a month.
I have read that every 200 miles is ok.
I do it more now, Since my chain snapped on me. once a week if used daily, or once a fornight if its not been out much.
Really dose take 2 mins, even tho I jack it up with a car jack.

I lube my chain when I think it needs done. When I think it needs done is the moment I look at it and decide..... Ahh that needs lubed.

So not as often as perhaps I should but often enough that the chain hasnt broke or got any kinks yet.

To the Hellkat. That gunk you mentioned comes off with washing up liquid, a sprinkling of sugar, a good scrub and hot water in that order.

I lube my chain every 200 - 250 miles (depend on the weather).

I don't really clean it, but every third time I give it a wipe and then re lube it.

I don't.

I keep a man to do that sort of thing for me - I provide food, beer and erm "relations" and he maintains my bikes and car.

Fair swap methinks. Smile
