What to check over on a moped when buying?

Right..

I made a thread day before yesterday saying I'm a newbie and that.

Moped's getting delivered on Saturday.

Just wondering what to check over? I know usual things like, let it tick over for a short while then take it out for a test drive. Anything else to look out for?

is it brand new?
how old is it if not?
what make/model?
2stroke or 4?

some general basics:


If new:

front and rear light including high beams, indicators, dash backlights, horn, brake lights (front and back lever operation) kill switch, electric start.

Brakes and ensure free spinning of wheels without brakes pulled (rear may be limited movement due to the CVT and centrifugal clutch) - push forward and pull front brake. push backwards and pull rear brake. bike should stop firmly


Engine oil level
Gear oil level
Tyre pressures
Make sure all bolts/nuts/screws are nipped right up
side to side play in either wheel (shouldn't be any)
I'd suggest coating all of the electrics in Holts Damp Start which will keep em dry.

If 2nd hand, all of the above plus:
change engine oil
change gear oil
tyre condition
brakes need more attention due to possible pad wear
Spark plug for colour and wear, best to replace with NGK equivalent (even if bike is new)
give it a bloody good thorough wash (not just the plastics, the harder it is to reach and clean, the more important it is to do so)


If you were to get slightly more thorough and in depth you could check the CVT belt for wear by taking the CVT cover off (only needed if 2nd hand)

I think Glen has covered most of it there, most importent things to check are :-

Do a HPI check or similar
Engine oil / 2 Stroke oil levels / Coolant levels if water cooled
Brakes work and are free
Test all the electrics work
Check tyres for tread and cuts/bulges
Check fork seals for weeping oil + rear shock
Take the plug out if possible and check the colour

Always get the seller to start engine from cold and listen for any nasty noises etc and excessive smoke (ignore if 2 stroke)

On the test ride check the bike is smooth, accelerates up to top speed smoothly and everthing works again.

Make sure the powerband is nice and tight. If it is pink, then defo buy it

Only joking mate. What the above people said. I didnt and I bought a right shed. Got it going really well now though

MAKE SURE YOU TEST RIDE IT.

My biggest mistake for sure.
