Hi everyone,

I'm looking for the folliwing for a 200 mile journey:

1) Fluorescent Jacket
2) Black Trousers
3) Boots

They have to be the following:

-Very Warm
-Totally Waterproof
-Boots do not need to be fancy- the more simple the better
-Cheap

What do you guys wear? Where do you get yours? What systems of weather proofing do you guys use?

I don't want to ruin my classic gear you see. Just want cheap and good stuff for long journeys/commuting.

www.getgeared.co.uk

I presume you will find everything you need at a great price.

Failing that try www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk

Where you off anyway?

I'm a fan of www.protecdirect.co.uk for stuff like cheap waterproofs, earplugs, hi-viz, thermals etc...

Don't compromise on boots though. While something welly-like (i.e. Derri boots) are great for keeping the weather out, they become slightly less amusing in the event of a spill. After a bit of looking around and trying different boots I settled on some Sidi B2 Gore. Totally waterproof and good levels of protection. A bit stiff and prone to scratching heel plates on bikes, but I'd recommend them. Failing that, Gore-Tex army boots get a lot of good press on BCF.

Hi

Boots I use some JTS ones for normal road use. Adequatly waterproof, but not really ever found anything beyond that.

Jacket I have a Spidi one. But wish I could find a new replacement (best jacket I have ever had but now almost worn out).

Trousers I have some black HG textiles. These are very good for being waterproof and pretty warm. In common with a lot of HG stuff though they seem to be a bit fiddling (ie how loosely the linings are held in place, etc), but that doesn't affect how well they work.

Gloves I have tended to buy to JTS 3 finger ones. Cheap and warm, and unlike most of the cloven hooves they are leather.

All the best

Keith

On the jacket, don't get stuck into the it has to be fluorescent. For a couple of quid. You can add a waistcoat from the market.

I would also add, don't expect the fluorescent jacket to help people see you, as they don't.

Only reason I ever wear the waistcoat in winter is the reflective stripes, should you end up laid in the road or a ditch.

It's not that cheap. Spada do some other great stuff that is a little more budget but good.

https://www.protecdirect.co.uk really like this site.

I have a fluorescent waist coat without the arms, and tbh when I've put it on I'm always wearing a black backpack so anyone behind me doesn't actually see too much of it.

Are you sure about fluorescent jackets not being that effective? It's certainly a must at night. I was thinking of this one for commuting around London but you say it's not worth it?

Hi

Trouble with a lot of hi viz stuff is that they are reflective and require light to shine on them to show up at night. Bright yellow alone isn't that obvious in the dark.

If you want a cheap vi hiz jacket and can put up with 2nd hand then ex police gear turns up at a fair few of the bike shows.

All the best

Keith

So they don't actually help at all in the day time?

Good lead with the police stuff, where do bikers meet in Oxfordshire/West London?

Hi

In the day they probably do. Although to an extent they are now so common that people do not register them so much.

All the best

Keith

Day-glo can help (in the day), but some poeple won't see you whatever you do. And it looks a bit naff. I use mine when it's misty/foggy/heavy rain in the day.

Reflective, as said, only works when there's light shone it, so it's not so good when people are pulling out on you, as their headlights aren't shining sideways.

So it can all help, but remember that there are still 1000s of blind idiots out there.
