Hey geeks, need your help.

I am thinking of getting myself a hard drive, mostly to store mp3's/mp4's, films, and photographs and art images / paintings I've scanned or worked in Photoshop or whatever.

So I'd like to know pretty much good/recommended makes/model. What to look for? It doesn't necessarily need to be easily portable. I'll use it mostly at home. I need to know the sort of prices I should be looking to spend for whatever gig.

It's mostly for storage, and moving music on/off onto MP3 player/laptop as and when.

And links to tried / tested sites (for purchases, not eBay - preferrably)

Thank you...Thumbs Up

Something like this is pretty cheap and should be a while till you manage to fill it up Razz

https://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/41222/Verbatim-1TB-USB-2-0-External-3-5--HDD-47512

They have lots of other ones.
I've always used microdirect and they've been ok for returns and stuff too.
Have a look through the external drives they have. Might be a good deal in there somewhere Smile

A 500gb drive will cost you around £40 so it seems a bit silly to get them when you can add £10 and get double the storage Razz

Currently using 2x Hitachi Deskstar SATA hard drives for my MP3s, games and movies etc.
I've had a 750Gb and a 1Tb version running in my home PC for the past 2-3 years with no problems. In fact I'm seriously considering adding one of the newer 2Tb drives

I've also used Western Digital in the past with no noticeable issues.

[EDIT] Also if portability is needed, external enclosures / HDD caddies are easily obtained Wink

I'm sure others will have their own views on the good and bad points of various marques - I'm just adding my Penny Coin Penny Coin from personal experience

I think she meant external drives Razz

I wouldn't pay lots of money for a superfast drive with bells and whistles if it's only going to be used now and then for transferring a few mp3's and stuff.
I think these days most drives are sufficient for most things.

If it was for a new internal drive then yeah. I'd get a fast drive Smile

If buying an external drive and/or caddy now then I'd be looking at USB3 devices cos it's about ten times faster than USB2.

Because the 3tb Western Digital disks haven't been around for very long it should be possible to get some good deals on smaller disks... 2tb Western Digital disk for £70 delivered by using the code 2TBSAVER at the checkout.. Or 1tb for £43 delivered.

More good deals.

I wish solid state drives would hurry the fuck up and get cheaper and faster. The hard drive is the only dated thing in my PC, but it's still just as fast as all the ones on the market atm. Solid states with a decent size and speed still cost the earth, yet pen drives are now stupidly cheap

Avoid these Seagates, especially in the 1.5TB version. Seagate is usually a good name but we have more than 50% returns of this one (though on the Argos website all the bad reviews for most products seem to have mysteriously dissapeared in the last few months!!)

Dont go for a seagate. I got a seagate 1TB drive and spend weeks transfering hundreds of cds onto it via my pc in belfast to bring with me to Portsmouth.

Plugged it in when I arrived and it wouldnt work. Couldnt even reformat the thing. It read that there was a disk drive attached but would crash when I tried to access it. A friend who builds pcs for a living tried to access it and nada... Even stripped it apart to access the HD inside and still nada.
