Hello, questions needing anwers

Hi guys, im new to this forum. I'm 16 and i'm looking to get a motorbike when i turn 17, now for the questions lol

1. Can I do my CBT when I'm 16 on a 50cc and hop on a 125cc on my birthday?

2. What learner bikes would you recommend, i'm looking for something cheap to buy + insure & something that looks ok. I don't really mind whether its a sports bike, commuter or a cruiser any will do

3. How much minimum should I expect to pay for a bike, insurance, clothing, road tax etc.

Hello and welcome.

Answers:

1. Yes you can go from a 50 onto 125 without doing a CBT again.

2. Naked 125 CG125 YBR 125, stick with Japanese.

3. Road tax is £15 a year for a 125cc bike, could pick up a decent Japanese bike for around £600. Get decent (used kit) of ebay. Important thing is to get a good fitting lid.

It is insurance.

TPO = Third Part Only.

TPFT = Third Party Fire and Theft.

FC = Fully Comprehensive.

Why not browse Ebay motors on the bikes section for '125's and see what sort of thing you like, come back so we can check it though we dont want you getting anything chinese

You could also get some quotes and start messing about with insurance and find one that could give you good prices, if your bored.

I'd second Paxovasa's answers. The Honda CG125, Suzuki GS and GN 125 and Yamaha YBR125 are all solid bikes. Just get whatever you like and can find at a decent price.

I personally got a '93 Yamaha RXS100, but I wouldn't recommend you do the same unless you're nuts like me and enjoy learning bike mechanics. That said, the engine has been very reliable and it's faster and more fun than the 4-stroke 125s I've ridden.

In regards to CBT, you'll have trouble finding a geared 50 at a test centre I imagine. So unless you have a friend with a geared 125 who can teach you clutch control (in a car park or private road of course ) you might want to consider waiting until you're 17 to do CBT.

Ok, i've had a look on ebay and all the ones i'm looking at are well over £1000, ideally id like something around £800 or less. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Local classifieds are a good bet. Had a look on Gumtree and found this rather nice SR125, although they're not quick from what I hear.

They're not as bad as the Cagiva Mito for reliability, but the engine is a fairly highly tuned 2 stroke, and as such will almost certainly have reliability issues at some point.

All these people that get into biking all seem to like the same thing. "I want it fast. I want it sporty and I want it fast and sporty now!"

The thing is, at the end of the day its a 125 and it may look fast, it may even sound fast and may even feel fast when you hammer it around the roads flat out, but the truth of the matter is, even in comparison to the training school trusties like the GS500, ER5 its a slow lardy lump.

Unless you plan to spend years on a 125cc bike then I would treat it for what it is. A means to an end. Something to run around on to pass your test on. For that I mean go with what the pax man said. Get an old ugly slow looking cg or ybr and use it until you pass your test.

With no experience on geared bikes or on the roads there is more a chance that you will drop it. Parts are dirt cheap in comparison to the plastic fantastic 125 bikes. Insurance is cheaper and they are more fuel economical.

Remember, When you pass your test you can ride any bike you want. Even if you have a 33bhp restriction on your license. In theory you can restrict a Suzuki Hyabusa and at 1300cc with a derestricted top speed of +200mph they dont get much bigger and faster than that.

Yeah, the premium on learner legal bikes is a bit silly. I think with a bit of patience and keeping an eye on local classified ads in free papers etc you'll probably find a better deal than ebay.

£100 for gear doesn't seem much, although you might manage it if you get some of it second hand.

If you get low end new stuff you're looking at:
Jacket £60
Trousers £80
Gloves £25
Boots £80
Helmet £50

That's about £300, even with the cheapest stuff.

If I were you I'd get a new Helmet that fits you properly from a shop, I have a £50 Box one and it's got a good safety rating. Then shop around in sales and second hand everything else.

Thanks for the replies everyone, they helped a lot. I'm sorry to say but I have some more questions lol.

1. Is there different types of test you can do? E.g. if I heard correctly there is an A1 and some other type of test? If these are the actual names of the test then what's the difference?

2. How long do you have to ride on a 125 before going to a bigger bike? It only because I'd want something that wasn't a piece of scrap metal because I'd be riding it frequently so I'd probably splash a bit more cash if it was for over 2 years

When 17 you can take your test on a 125, you will be restricted to 33 bhp (brake horse power). You will be restricted to 33 bhp for two years after passing your test. But you can restrict a 600cc bike. Or even a bigger or smaller bike. After the two years you can ride any size bike without it been restricted.

When 21 or older you can take a DAS (direct access) test. That cuts out the two years restriction.

For you, you would have to take your test on a 125 and be restricted to 33bhp for two years, If you passed the test on your 17th birthday, then when you turned 19 you could in theory buy an unrestricted R1 and ride it legally.

You can get some pretty good new stuff on ebay for cheap. My instructor had a pair of Wulfsport gloves I really liked (not great protection, but great feel for learning), looked on ebay and got a brand new pair for £8. Brand new HJC helmets for £30. Jackets with CE armour for £30. They aren't great makes, but they will do the bare minimum. If you can afford more, then by all means spend it, but if you are tight on cash and really want to start biking you can get some decent stuff for little money.
