Following on from passing my test yesterday, but getting a right old bollocking from the examiner for not having my visor down most of the time, what are your views Confused

He gave me a graphic description about a mate of his crashing and breaking his leg when he had a bee-strike, and said I should always have my visor down. He said he'd have failed me if he could, but as it wasn't a legal requirement, he could only lecture me... Rolling Eyes

I ride round town with the visor up, and normally wear sunglasses when out and about, but am looking at the flip helmets with integrated tinted/clear visors for next year...what do you all think?

I've had a bee lodge into the bit between my temple and the helmet.
Wasn't nice for the short time until it stung me, when it was even less nice!

Further, get a stone flicked up from the vehicle in front; and the speed of your bike to the stone coming the other way and it can do some decent damage even at town speeds.

If you've got decent tough sunglasses I'd be slightly less worried - facial scarring is still less bad than being blinded probably!

I've got Cabergs with the drop-down sun visors, but they don't go low enough for me to be useful, as they sit in my vision.

Normally if I'm at 30 or under, I have the visor up (sometimes though with the sun visor over my eyes still down) and then when I go over 30 it's visor down.

Visor down most of the time, but I've got a Pinlock insert now.

When I was riding my scooter, I never had it down, there was no point.

You can do whatever you want, as Matt said, your instructor sounds like a cock.

My visor is usually up until I start getting above 40-50ish, even then it's still open an inch or so. It doesn't get closed unless I'm doing more than 70. Although I've had stuff hit my face, I've not had anything in my eyes since I switched from contact lenses to glasses.

When slow through towns etc il pop the visor up, soon as im off above around 30-40 its visor down. I had a bee to the neck at around 85-90 a few months back and it felt like id been shot, fecking hurt!! Id hate to think what wound have happened if that had hit me square in the eye.

Not many bees about in late october, so the examiner is an idiot.

Far more likely to steam up in late october with a closed visor.

Generally for me, its visor up about town, and visor down on fast roads, which I guess is probably why the forum "visordown" uses that name.

I have had a fly hit me in the eye at a moderate speed, but fortunately I have two eyes, so was able to use the other while swearing into my helmet.

You can have a compromise and have your visor half open, so it doesnt mist up but it also deflects anything coming your way.

Visor open until about 30mph, then have it fully closed. If its raining i always have it closed or cracked open a notch.

Just to clarify, my instructor said; 'it's up to you, you're an adult-make your own mind up'...the EXAMINER gave me the bollocking Rolling Eyes

I agree with him, but surely it's not up to the examiner to give lectures...

After constantly getting battered in the face by insects, in the eye. And even a stone right between the eyes. Now, I have mine 4/5 of the way closed.

My visor is down 99% of the time, unless its really really cold and it steams up (which is rare) or if it steams up when I'm sat at lights, and its really cold. (Which again, is rare). Even then open a click or two and its fine.

I don't like to have my visor up, had something flick in my eye before and its painful Laughing Oh and on more than one occasion had a decent sized stone flick up and hit my visor which would have caused decent damage otherwise.

Always down. At most, cracked open to the first click when in town. I only ever lift the visor at red lights, then it's down again as soon as I pull away.

I do use a Pinlock insert and have a well-ventilated lid.

Visor down or cracked open for air.

If it's all the way up I am always concerned about a rock or piece of grit in the eye.

If it hits the looking-out-bit of your cornea then you could easily have permanent sight damage which is easily avoidable.

I think the examiner was trying to enforce some pretty reasonable advice.

Why do some people consider sensible advice as authoritarian doctrine?

My visor is tinted and stays down all of the time. It hides my big ugly mug thats why! at night time, I am able to display a bit more face! But the steaming is an issue, although someone once told me that one of those clear visor inserts seems to dramatically reduce steaming. My tinted insert definitely did. I think it was the small gap between the visor itself and the plastic insert.

A fog city or a pin-lock completely eliminates steamed up visors.
I prefer pin lock Smile

For me it depends on the weather, if my visor is steamed up, or if it's too hot. Problem is everyone is becoming a safety nazi.

"You must do this, you must do that"...it gets very tiresome. The best way to deal with the critics is to smile and say, 'I hear what you're saying.' And then do what the heck you want.

Don't let it get to you...otherwise they are winning, they've got into your head... Karma

Visor up until about 25, crack open between 25 to 60, down above 60.

A grasshopper hit me in the throat before. I was doing like 40. Hurts like hell. Never had a bullet in the throat before (touch wood) but this must be close to that.

Had lots of little flies hit me in the face at various speeds, they sting above 40mph. Had a couple little ones hit me in the eye but a really bad one hit me in the eye and exploded. I couldn't see out of it properly until I got home and washed the guts and grit out.

In winter my visor is down most of the time. In summer I want to, and regretfully, keep it open to have a bit of air moving around, although it's the worst time for bugs.

I got hit by a golf ball sized rock on the shin going about 40mph wearing kevlar jeans. Broke the skin and left a hell of a bruise. Be horrible if it'd hit me in the face. Didn't someone have a rock fall off a truck and smash his screen to bits recently?
