Honda VF400. Any good, and can I restrict it?

I'm doing my restricted test in the near future and have been keeping an eye out for suitable bikes. I wandered into a local bike shop and an old Honda VF400 caught my eye. I can't remember what year, but depending on your responses I'll go and have a proper look this week.

I'm assuming it wouldn't be too hard to put some kind of 33bhp restriction on it...suggestions?

Nice enough bikes, but with nightmare front brakes. "Inboard" disks, which were a pain to work on.

Also I think the coolant is routed through the frame tubes, which can lead to some nasty frame corrosion.

Meant to handle well enough. Comfy.

As to restriction, other than trying to get the carbs off the should restrict well enough. Not sure if anyone does a kit.

They were UK models but plenty were imported as grey imports as well. There was also a fully faired version that was only a grey import (the UK version of that was the VF500).

I'll keep an eye out for corrosion and most likely take a mate who knows what he's talking about. Just really liked the look of it and it seems like a bit more fun than the normal first big bike commuter 500s.

Also have very complex motors - usual camchain issues and don't like neglect. In good nick they are pretty good, although there are plenty of more modern 400's around for simillar cash.

Despite my soft spot for 80s bikes I think I'll probably get something a bit newer and more sensible. Thanks for your advice

i had one when i was considerably younger,
fastest 400 ive ever owned, never let me down and could blow all my mates away with more modern 400's
the only down side was the inboard brakes, they still did the job though
