Shaving Down Graphite Gasket?

Hi guys.

I was just wondering how you would recommend reducing the outer radius of a graphite exhaust gasket?

For some reason they fit fine over my slip on link pipe, but the gasket is slightly too large to fit in the downpipes.

It's not a case of no lube etc, it's physically too big, but not by much

Open up the pipe to make it fit as you will be clamping this section i would asume then it will compress the pipe when you tighten the exhaust clamp and form a nice seal.

How would I go about increasing the size of the pipe so that the gasket fits?

I don't want to bodge it.

It is too small when the clamp is completely loosened off (I actually remove the clamp so it's not a factor).

I either need to modify the gasket, or make the two holes (there are two cans) at the end of the downpipes larger.

EDIT: I just ordered a set of three exhaust expanders. Hopefully should do the job that I need them for.

I was going to suggest buying a thinner gasket, or even using a homemade gasket made from high temp silicone sealant.

Hope the expanders sort it Thumbs Up .

Thats the tool you need but why buy 3 expanders?
I have one and it does the job fine, can only open up one pipe at a time but i only have 1 pair of hands, do you have more than one pair of hands? if so do you come from Norfolk? lol Mr. Green

I only need one expander, and after searching through ebay, the price of one is about £20, and I decided I may as well spend £23 including delivery for the kit with different sizes.

Why you may ask?

It may come in handy for mates bikes, cars etc.

You can never have enough tools. Laughing

Would you get the heat gun onto the stainless steel pipe before using the expander or just go for it?

Oh you can never ghave to many tools Thumbs Up
It was just that i have the one size and it does what i need it to do (pipe expander! lol) as most exhausts now a days seem to be of a larger bore than years ago (unless you have a moped / small cc bike)
As for heating the stainless: it depends if you want it to change colour, because it will, just like the down pipes when they come out the engine due to the heat.
You only have to open it a little bit it should be ok as is, just take you time and push the expander in only as far as you need to put the pipe in.
the expanders are spring loaded so dont worry if it gets out of shape.
