took the GN250 in for its clutch replacement today and asked the bloke to have a listen to the engine for me as i felt it was making a tappety noise, and I wanted confirmation.
He knelt down to the engine, listened, rose back up and told me I'd better get rid of it quick.
Apparently according to him the cam chain is on its way out.
the noise to me sounds like it's coming from the head and sounds a bit like valve chatter but I lack in experience.
Without stripping the engine down is there any way of checking this? I'm thinking of getting a second opinion from another garage.
The bikes done 20,000 and is on a 1990 plate.

it could just be a simple need for the valve tappets to be adjusted to the correct clearances.

I imagine these bikes are quite simple. Somone with more knowledge will come along.

As with all bikes these mostly get ignored in the service and so nobody bothers with them, then complain their engine is buggered......

Hope you get it sorted

I've already changed the oil and filter... changed the clutch, cleaned the air filter, new spark plug, and changed the oil and filter again lol

Did he then offer to buy it from you for £15 and a mars bar?

Fitting a new cam chain isn't that difficult, certainly not new bike difficult. Sure it wasnt the cam chain tensioner guides or something? They could potentially require a lot more work to replace if they are in the crankcase and tricky to get at.

I doubt he can really get a good idea that dire things will happen soon just from listening. Doubt even a new engine on that bike is expensive, adjust the valve clearances to eliminate that and have another garage listen to it.

Valve clearances on wee bikes of that era are a piece of piss btw, just get yourself a manual and follow it closely with a mate Thumbs Up .

I wouldn't expect the cam chain to be shot in 20000 miles, tensioner possibly, more likely tensioner adjustment IMO.
Either way I wouldn't get shot of it till you've checked.

Roy.

The cam chain on my Gs was out of adjustment at around 18,000 i think, although i have no idea wether that was correct mileage or not Rolling Eyes It was an '82 bike mind Thinking

What year is the Gn? I imagine the 250 version is very similar to the 125 but obviously i cant be 100% The 125 Gn had the same engine as the Gs.

Yeah taps no problem, knocks big problem.
That my analogical brave wave for today!

You can do the valve clearences and chain tensioner your self, just buy the manual. Won't cost much to have done by a mechanic too.
