For those of you with NSR125s or RS125s that are over the 14.4bhp learner limit, have you had your bike restricted to 14.4bhp or can you just ride them at normal power with L plates and get away with it?

My NSR is currently restricted, however, I am seriously thinking about getting it de-restricted within the next month or two Laughing

Normal power IS 14.4bhp.
De-Restricted is 30ishbhp.
When you buy them fromt he shop they come restricted, you have to actually physically derestrict them yourself.
And unless you are in a serious accident no one will know or care.

sounds good, thanks for the help Thumbs Up

Just another quick thing, do NSR125s hold their value?

I turn 21 next year and would probably want a bigger bike and provided I dont rag the hell outta the bike do you think I could sell it without too much of a loss?

As long as you don't crash the bike and abuse it then it will hold it's value well as 125 two strokes are getting harder to come by. Use decent two stroke oil, let it warm up and keep it serviced Thumbs Up

I think mine is derestricted....actually I don't know. I'll have to ask Mcjam.

They do tend to hold their value, from my experience with buying one and shopping around for one.

If it is an early NSR import then it will not be restricted, unless someone has shoved in a restricted CDI or messed with something else!

I bet you didn't know this but if the bike was registered before 1982, then it wouldn't and doesn't need to be restricted, nice RD125 anyone? Wink.

Oh and as for derestricting them on a learner licence is illegal, it technically leaves you with out any licence at all and no insurance so don't do it!

Oh and NSR's tend to hold there value quite well depending if there looked after and cared for Smile.

I would think it would be easier to sell your 125 on after you've moved on if you keep it restricted? Whoever buys it from you is probably going to want to use it to learn on, and might want to be legal about it....

If you get it derestricted and have an accident..

Any insurance company worth it's salt is going to see a young lad/lass making a claim on a bike, and they'll come and have a look.

If they find out it's derestricted POOF there goes your insurance cover.

It may not be as obvious on an NSR but on peds they'll see a non-standard exhaust, see you havn't declared it, and you've got no bike left.

Bummer..

When I had my NSR and was still on CBT I did use it not restricted and sometimes used L plates and sometimes didn't. It wasn't even mentioned at the test centre when doing my test they had posters going on about how you need proof that it's restricted for a Mito and RS but no mention of NSR.

Nope, Danny had his NSR which was a fairly modern one and was running fine put on a dyno at Big CC Racing last year and it showed 23bhp.

you could claim that you didn't know the bike was derestricted and it was like that when you bought it. If it's your first bike then how do you know what a restricted and non-restricted bike feels like.

My bike's still restricted but seriously thinking of derestricting it with the above excuse.

Insurance companies won't accept excuses like that.

They will find any tiny reason to avoid paying out, and the bike not being restricted is a good enough one for them. Chances are it won't be a problem, but if there's a major accident or anything and they discover you were driving it de-restricted, blame will be shifted straight to you.

If they do find out (which isn't very likely) they will not be interested in any excuses, as it all comes down to being your responsibility to make sure the bike is suitable for you and if it's not that that's your fault not anyone elses.

Get some proof that it is restricted (even if it is just a letter from a dealer on headed paper). Shaun had problems on his test as although his RS was restricted the examiner refused to test him without proof of this.

All the best

I had no problem riding derestricted until a traffic cop pulled me for hooning round&between roundabouts on an urban dual carriageway.

He gave me the talk, pointing out the k.n.o.b.b.l.e.d tyres which 'were sliding around' out of the roundabouts and that it 'should be a restricted 125.' He must have guessed by the acceleration that it wasn't restricted!

My own fault for getting pulled though. It was a Friday evening, near the local MaccyD's where the boyracers sit around, looking repulsive. I was just after a bit of stress relief after finishing work at 8pm.

I've just bought my 1994 RG125FUN from a local import dealer in Bristol.

The guy said that the bike came de-restricted (meaning it had never been restricted since it came off the production line). He explained that the import models are not restricted anyway. I paid for a 125, shouldn't the insurance company pay out for what I bought? It is a 125, fair enough if the noise levels are too high, and the emissions are too high, don't pay out, but for having a bike which the dealer sold to me as a learner legal 125, doesn't that count?

No.

It is grounds to take it back to the shop, if he sold you it as learner legal, which it isn't.

But insurance companies do not care. I repeat, ICs DO NOT CARE.

If your bike is dodgy, if they find out, then bye bye policy, and if you are very unlucky, charges laid against you as well (possible but unlikely)

Insurance companies will care if it came down to a claim. Strangly enough they don't like paying out and if the claim is high enough then they'll do everything they can to get out of paying. If they told you all that when you bought it then you can't complain as you bought it knowing all that full well.

Nope, full power is 23.4bhp on an NSR, Danny had his one put on a dyno and it came out with that as the result. The RS will be a little bit more, but not much so we're talking about 24bhp I expect.
