Gumtree is full of scams. Only bike I've been to see from gumtree had a number-plate with multiple mounting holes and the V5 was for a different bike with the same reg number.
All good fun!

I was going to go and see this https://www.gumtree.com/london/55/67825055.html

It's nearby and the description seems good. What do you think?

Plus a bike thats been sitting for a year and half will probably need things like seals and tyres replaced for fresh rubber.

Generally bikes are ok for that sort of time I'd say.

There are some good deals on gumtree, but a very high proportion compared to other places are scams or stolen, so I'd definitely approach anything on there with a lot of caution.

I got this back on the R6:

Quote:
Hi there,

as per the advert, I am helping to find a buyer for my friend as he has been living abroad for the last year and a half. The bike is kept in his mothers garage so I just need to check that she is in over the weekend to let us into the garage but I suspect that she will be available.

My friend left the logbook signed when he was last here in September for a visit and showed me a few other things that he had, I think there were some spare keys and possibly the service manual but I would need to check. Sorry to not be very precise at this stage but I need to check to make sure I don't give you the wrong info.

MOT wise, it will pass it no problem but have not got round to doing it. If anybody wants to buy it then the MOT could be included subject to paying the full asking price for the bike. The bike is not taxed at the moment and would not be included either seeing as we have no insurance at the moment which is required if we were to tax it.

Thanks for your time and feel free to ask any further questions

It does look to good to be true, but that said, I just sold my C1h about a month ago for £1900 because I was desperate for the cash. So there are bargains to be had out there.

There are certainly some very good bargains to be had.

First off, ring the guy, and ask about "the bike you got for sale". If he says "what bike" then immediately think "trade".

Now, trade isn't all bad. So next ask him straight up, why so cheap. He'll either tell you whats wrong. I saw a bandit on there for cheap, turned out it needed a new chain and sprocket, forks were pitted, and front fairing was scratched, and the paint was faded. So although it wasnt a scam, he just didnt advertise that, because he wanted to generate interest.

However, I can't stress the importance of checking everything. Research the bike. Check which services are the most important. I found out today, whilst asking about VFR800s that the VTEC models have notoriously expensive services at 35,000 miles. So theres a lot of VTECs out there at about 30K miles.

Research your bike, research the bike your buying. Do the text reg check to see if its been recorded stolen or whatnot. Ask the guy for the VIN and Engine numbers. A lot of vehicle check companies offer you a compensation scheme if you check with VIN numbers as well as reg numbers. I know that My Text Check cover you for up to £20,000. So its a good investment for a few bob.

I think with a bit of streetsmart, you'll get an awesome bargain. Just make sure you don't take anyone's word for anything. Assume everyone is lying. But, because most run away scared to dealerships etc, there are some good bargains that are missed. And if your willing to take some time to deal with each prospective sale, you'll save awesome amounts of money.

Type in reg check in google

but you usually have to pay a couple of quid for it, worth it if your actually going to buy it though.

The online checks tend to be expensive.

I use My Text Check.

text the Registration number to 83600

There'll be a series of texts from then on, works out at £5 i think, dont hold me to that. and then i think they'll give you a link to go on and enter the VIN afterwards. THis is optional, but compulsory if you want the cover.

Having said that I've just spoken to another guy with a C1H for the same price with full Akra, both keys, etc.

Might go and see that too
