PostPosted: 17:08 - 03 Nov 2010    Post subject: Abandoned scooter - how to re claim? Reply with quote

Have seen a scooter parked up near my mates flat, private offroad parking and has sat there for 3 years literally gathering dust. Enough for someone to write 'cock' on the mirrors Smile

I'm interested in contacting the owner to see what the score is, and wouldn't mind making an offer on it so I thought I'd try and get some advice off of here.

The tax disc on it expired 31 - Jul - 2008, checked DVLA web site but the date of liability is showing as 01 - Aug - 2011.

I'm sure theres a massive obvious reason why it's updated, but duhh I couldn't figure it out so... any help? I'm sure I've read on here before about people getting hold of bikes that have been abandoned, legally of course!

Thanks - Ad

Current registered keeper keeping it SORN'd would renew the date of liability.

This does my nut in.

Somebody can leave a bike outside for 45 mins, (see Steve's thread atm) and it gets stolen, but 3 years and it's still sat there gathering dust, and it's a sodding scooter?

On topic though I'm not quite sure how you'd go about getting the contact details of the owner. You can do it through the DVLA if I remember correctly, but you need a good reason to request the information.

Good luck,

Steve.

Hold on a sec.

Plenty of us have bikes we don't use very often. Many of us have bikes we haven't used for three years. If someone requested information from the DVLA about a bike I owned, on road or not I'd be pretty miffed to be honest.

Why not try and find the flat or house of the person who owns the scooter and offer them some money for it? They'll probably accept as the bike doesn't seem to work etc. However, If they have a plan to get it back on the road etc then they might not want you trying to request the V5. It isn't your bike, and just because it is sat doesn't mean you can instantly claim it. A bike being in a private car parking space is quite different from one that has been abandoned in a field, or left when a new tenant moves into a house or something.

If I were you, I'd forget about trying to get a free bike.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Privately parked then forget about it.

I've got a battered old cg125 in a lockup near my house which ocasionally gets left out front when a cars being worked on. I planed on doing up 4-5 years ago and still do. if somebody saw it and requested my details from the dvla then came round asking for it I would me a bit miffed and they would get both barrels for being such a cheaky cunt.

Write the owner a letter and attach it to the mirror with "cock" on it.

Cheers guys,

Yeah you have a point Marjay didn't really think of it like that!

I wouldn't normally give it a second glance but the compound where its parked up has vehicles left all the time. Anything from mountain bikes to half decent motors left to rust. Even a nice old Jag that got left to fall apart then towed away eventually.

There's a lot of people using the flats as a home from home, then moving away from Glasgow and never coming back, thats the main reason I was wanting to look into rescuing the little scooter!

Thanks for all your help though - Ad

Cyberglass,

There is a difference between something sitting in exactly the same spot for 3 years though and a bike that gets left outside for a few months here and there.

Someone should give you both barrels for letting a CG sit about doing nothing!!
