I see there's a new MG out.
Based on the old Rover 75 apparently.
News article if you click here.

If it's anything like other Chinese cars (I cite the Jiangling Landwind as the quintessential example) it'll bow under the strain of its own weight and be the first car to earn a negative number of NCAP stars by actively and intentionally inflicting extra harm on its passengers during a crash.

Hi

Autocar had a write up driving review of this a few months ago. Was generally very positive, although the version they were reviewing was a late prototype. Compared pretty well with the Ford Focus

Basically seems to be a UK designed car which has now been in production for some time in China (although badged as Roewe I think), while the UK version was being reengineered a bit to have higher quality design and better driving qualities.

MG were denying that is was anything other than very vaguely related to the 75.

All the best

Keith

The ZR ZS and ZT had the chance to drag the company out of the ditch but they ballsed it up by going cheap on the build quality. A ZR with a decent 2L turbo engine could have been the next Focus RS but cheaper.

The new MG looks shit and considering it has links with both the chinese and rover it'll probably drive like it too. Just looking at the available pics it looks decidedly budget. Sounds like they built a turd for the chinese market and are going to polish it for the UK one.

Hi

Building Rover 75s in China, building a few TFs in the UK, sorting out the Longbridge site and designing the next generation such as this one. It is only 5 years since MG Rover went phut.

Took a few years to sort out who got what from MG Rover (2 competing Chinese makers got different bits of the company, but have since merged).

They have been selling the Roewe 750 (Rover 75 basically) for about 4 years, and the Roewe 550 for a couple of years. MG 6 is a derivation of the Roewe 550 I think. There are meant to be a few more cars in development as well.

MG 6 Preview

All the best

Keith

Personally i've always liked MG's - latest i had was a 2004 ZT190 saloon and to be honest i loved it, was quick enough (for a big boat), comfy, handled well, lovely to drive and in the year i had it not a single thing went wrong with it, nothing - and it had a very hard year under my ownership... did about 40k in a year and pretty much daily it was thrown into tripple figure speeds on the motorway on my too / from work. brilliant car, i actually miss it a little.

this one, but black :

It isn't based on the 75 except for the fact that it shares an engine with it according to Pistonheads and various other sites.

This is just a boring, FUGLY, car, I can only assume the designers got there tracing paper out and copied a Proton Gen 2!Sick :-

Those are my thoughts.

The new MG looks very similar to the R60 that was proposed 7-8 years ago. It was the model that was going to bail out Rover until TWR went bust and took all the investment with them.

Of little interest to most but the last time I looked the guy in charge of quality in the UK was in the same job when they were MG Rover.

I loved that car, it was an old "F" reg, (1967), it had the wire wheels just like the ones in the photo. (as I said, exactly the same).
Red leather seats with white piping, a walnut dash, with "Smiths" clocks, and proper switches on it, like these:-

https://shop1.actinicexpress.co.uk/shops/Rat_Sport/images/catalog/reprolucastoggleswitch.jpg

It had a 1275 engine with twin carbs and pancake air filters, yes it did have the luggage rack on the boot.

My Dad and I did a restoration on it , (he had an MGB GT).

I seem to recall it was something of a babe magnet as well.

Sorry, I seem to have lapsed into a bout of nostalgia, Wub, I'll away and get me pipe and slippers! Laughing

That MG6 looks utterly... meh.

I believe it's loosely based on the "55" platform that MG Rover were working on when they went titsup. The 1.8 75/ZT engine was never particularly powerful nor economical even a decade ago. Launching without a turbodiesel in 2011 is just bizarre.

The good points of the 75/ZT were that it felt carved from solid, had that delicious mini-Rolls rear end, and it... wafted. My V6 75 knocked the socks off my brother's 330 lout-mobile for refinement and gave my dad's E280 a good run for its money.

As I understand it, the new MG6 has none of those qualities. It's hard to see how they can market it against the Focus when early reviews are saying that it's not as good. Maybe (and I'm only half joking here) they should try waving the flag and selling it through Triumph dealerships?
