Looks like I am about to be provided with the address for a repeat offender bike and quad thief who currently has my quad (stolen last wednesday)

Do I call the police and get them to pay him a visit? problem is they will probably take forever about it and the quad may well be gone before then.

Or do I take matters into my own hands and get the lads together and get it back? the problem here is obviously a bit of a legal issue.

If I go with the lads I know full well we wont leave it at just getting the quad back but how far can we go?

Or shall I just post his address on every bike forum I can think of? I can tell you now he lives in the farnborough/cove area

Go around and ask him for your quad back as you've heard that he has it (don't be threatening and go on your own - or have a mate in the car as back up if needed). If he denies it or gets aggressive with you, leave and inform police. If you then get it back via the police, great, if not claim on your insurance and wait a while before considering any "other" options (if you think it's worth it as it'll not make much difference).

The law abiding citizen in me says just contact the police. The avenging bastard in me says tear him a new arsehole...

It's a tough decision really but just bear one thing in mind, yes, he's a thieving scrote, but if you batter him and he fingers you, you'll be the one who ends up in trouble..even if the twat deserves it.

Knock on door, jump in car. Bit of luck he'll follow you on the quad, stop, reverse over him.

Damn fool on stolen quad going too fast with no helmet crashed into you didn't he !!

Or, if you don't mind another option of a loss, go round the back, see quad, pour petrol and add lit match, try explaining that to the old bill when they turn up to investigate.

Best not do it tonight though eh!

If you just told the police you knew where your quadbike was, they probably wouldn't consider that evidence enough for a search, but if you knocked on his door and he pulled a gun on you I bet the police would be round there pretty handy.

Eh? Seems an ideal way to be pretty sure you have to make a claim if he even has insurance that covers it that's worth claiming on.

Bloke is very likely to ask you to go away, then if they've got any sense, take the quad somewhere else.

Either get some decent evidence and contact the police I'd say, or if you're going to do it yourself, make damn sure you and your friends know what you're doing and get it sorted.

If it was my property, i'd consider going professional "thief" on them.

And "steal" it back at an appropriate time. Worth checking the law on this, as if it's your property, you can't be stealing it in a legal or moral sense, right? You'd probably want to find that out first before you even think about doing anything.

P.S. Second what G said, if you ask for it back, you'll probably get non-compliance at best. And the quad won't be there when you come back, assuming the thief has even an ounce of common sense.

I had a mate who did this with a mini moto. It appeared by his front door the next day (cleaned). May had something to do with the politness of his request when he asked for it back (or possibly his size - large, and his rep - has been known to take things into his own hands locally).

The OP has to either a) trust in the legal system or b) handle it himself (which may carry consequences that wouldn't be worth a quad bike depending on his lifestyle).

It all depends. Are you actually willing to go round and deal some damage or are you all talk like 99% of people are in these situations.

Pay him a visit.....

Scum like that arent fussed about the police, but they do generally give a shit about waking up with no teeth left.

There's a VERY, VERY easy way to get the police interested.

Watch the property concerned, then ring the fuzz and tell them that you're outside the location of a stolen vehicle and that you're going in tooled up.

They'll fucking FLY there.

Best advice so far.

Karma is heading your way my good friend.

Thumbs Up

Personally I would also do him. I have never had anything I have owned in my life damaged or stolen by someone else, but when that day comes it would seriously set me off.

Go to the police and justice will never be done.

Probably, or he would have done it already and not posted on a public forum about what he is going to do.

I "recovered" the girlfriends stolen bike a couple of years back, after the scrote happened to push it past me in broad daylight. Happily the cheque from the insurance company had happened to arrive that day too by sheer coincidence. Obviously. Shhh!

There wasn't a lot of resistance - these weasels are generally spineless. If it were me, I'd go and "recover" my quad; but be damned sure you can back it up if things start to go tits up. If not, call the police.

Good luck!

Yes. If you have a bit of a reputation and know you're unlikely to face repercussions (ie some bricks through your windows a few weeks later apparently at random), I'm sure asking nicely will work.
The rest of the time, I'd suggest it's unlikely to get good results, especially with a habitual low-life.

What we did for my Nephew was got a few lad together, nothing big, then went around to the house ( got the details of the house by giving a phone number to the local Taxi guys and putting up a £50 reward to the Taxi guys). We knocked on the front and back doors, but didn't wait for an answer as we just walked in. As it was no one was home (the house was fully furnished, washing in the washing machine and all that) We hung around the house and checked the garage, saw the bikes tyre marks, but no bike. After a short while to women turned up, one with a gob like a sewer, then the Police turned up. We explained to the Police what we knew, but they could do much and we then left. About an hour later we had a phone call from the mother of the prat who had nicked the bike saying the bike would be parked outside a shop in half an hour and she didn't want anything to happen to her son. We went straight to the shop and found the bike already there. it was a write off, but we had it back and knew the details of a bike thief.
Funny that the bike theft rate went down for 12 months in the local area.

Police wont really care until you do something yourself that they can easily pin on you. Best thing to do is to ring them up and say he's been doing wheelies on youtube and hopefully every spare resource in the five-oh will turn up for the easy catch.

Or you could wait for her majestys finest to bring justice (or community service, if they can be arsed with the paperwork) tothe perp!

I would love to say that the police should be your first port of call but unfortunately these days it seems that their hands are tied so far behind their backs by red tape and the safeguarding of criminals rights that it will likely end with you not getting it back. I have been in the position of catching a thief and restraining them until the police arrived and also providing them with a DVD of the entire event only to have the offender reappearing 4 days later to taunt me! Because they had a drug problem/alcohol/horrible parents etc they got yet another slap on the wrist and a promise to try harder to behave this time. It's not the fault of the police but the rules and process they follow, regardless they are ineffective and I'm tired of the "sorry you have been a victim of crime" letters. Last person to steal from my shop (repeat offender) was taken round the corner and pinned against the wall by his neck off the floor and given a verbal threat/warning, don't like resorting to that but local cops are on first name terms with most of our problems and seem to think it's just something we should live with

As far as I know it's not illegal to reclaim your stolen property as long as you break no laws doing so.
That means if you did go and get it back, you'd get done for trespass. They would probably drop that or give you a caution.
