What bike do you think would be good if I've just pased my test?
I'm 17, and I have passed my CBT, Theory and then Modules 1 + 2. I will be restricted to bikes of 33bhp or less for the next 2 years. I can take suggestions of bikes that have upto 36bhp, as they allow a 10% tolerance 
Would I even be better off keeping my RXS100 for a little bit longer, or getting a faster 125 or? :S
Any suggestions at all? 
(I was thinking a Honda CB250 or a Suzuki GS500 restricted to 33bhp. But the bigger bikes are wayyyy too much insurance :/ any other ideas?)[/b]

If you cant afford the insurance on a bigger bike then keep the 100 until renewal time and then you have a no claims bonus. It will make next years insurance cheaper.
Also buy second hand. They are cheaper than new bikes to insure.

Is this true? I always wondered if you whack an aftermarket exhaust on a 33bhp bike it will push it over so what can you do?

I've heard of people getting away with 35/36bhp before on other forums. They also say it's 33bhp/25kw maximum power. Take 10% of that, which is 2.5kw. The add that on and you get 27.5kw = 37bhp. However, take 10% of 33bhp and add it together and you get 36.3bhp So if they do allow 10% it can get pretty confusing ahaa. It's all about where the power is measured and who's dyno. Some dyno's read different to others.
As for a performance exhaust, I don't see it doing much to be honest. If your bike is restricted in the inlet side of the engine, then the flow of air wont be fast enough to get any performance difference from an open-can. I reckon it'd sound quite nice though

Maybe aye, maybe no. There's an epic saga here about a young bloke who got lifted for having an over powered bike.
Synopsis: the bike tested at "over 10% over" 25kW, so there maybe something in that 10% figure. However, it's unclear whether that was just a policy of the local plod, and the CPS never picked it up, so we just don't know. It would take some FOI requests to find out.
Even then, we'd have to find out whether it's 25kW at the crank or the rear wheel. 95/1/EC implies that it's the crank, but that's with the engine bench tested under controlled conditions. All dynos that John Law will use will measure at the rear wheel and use some voodoo bullshit to estimate crank power.
In short, there's no way to be sure that your "restricted" bike actually conforms to the law, would be accepted as conforming to the law, or even what the law means.
An "Fi International" certificate might give you peace of mind for a vastly inflated price (£200 for £1 of washers and a piece of paper), but if that's all you're after, then keep the certificate, and just throw the washers away. |

Thats the exact thread that I read! ahaa, I'm pretty sure that if your 100bhp bike made 40bhp, then I suppose they might let you off, seeing as how you've gone to some length to restrict it. And as for the FI restrictors...they're the biggest rip-off ever! The certificate doesn't even mean anything, yet they charge you excessively for it :@

Depends what you mean by "let you off". The chap in question may not have been prosecuted in the end, but having his bike seized, kept for weeks and damaged, all while being under the threat of prosecution, isn't a great outcome, even if he does manage to claim some of his losses back.
Honestly, he'd have been better off riding a 100hp bike with a bullshit piece of paper to stop Plod taking an interest. |
Very true :/ unfortunately, it's the coppers that need re-educating about how to deal with restricted bikes. Technically, the certificate is a load of b*llocks anyways. There was a HUGE write up about it in MCN last year sometime
