i never let any of my bikes warm up before riding, neighbours would hate me and i just dont see the point.

Just ride it gently keeping the revs below 5k for the first few miles.

I just get on and ride off now as I don't thrash the bike from the start of a ride anyway. It's not really any different to just hopping in the car and driving off as most drivers do tbh.

I turn the engine, then take the big lock of the wheel, take the cover off, then pull on gloves, helmet, jacket balaclava, over trousers and scratch my balls. By then I am normally up to 5 minutes.

I give it a minute or two but generally when the choke is on it attracts too much attention thanks to the lack of a baffle in the zaust Very Happy

Bike is running on choke while a shut the garage door, then it's choke off and ride away. Keep it under 5,000rpm until the dual carriageway about 3-4 miles into my journey (no temp gauge on the ER5).

Start bike, ride off. Got about 3 miles before I hit any NSL on my commute, and the bike's normally up to temperature then - until then it's mainly 30mph, and the TDM's sitting at a bit over 2000 rpm for that, so no different to leaving it idling with the choke on at 2000 rpm for five minutes till it gets up to temperature IMO.

I've done this with all my bikes, and the last two I sold had 69k miles, and 56k miles respectively; both were still going strong when they were sold. Saw the last one back up for sale the other day on Gumtree about a year after I'd sold it - he'd put a further 5k miles on it, and it seemed to be a genuine advert.

Sounds familiar Thumbs Up

I usually start up and ride off straight away too. I usually have the choke on for riding from a cold start, and keep the revs around 3-5k for the first mile or two

Start it and ride off straight away.

Leaving it idling doesn't warm it up properly, so is rather pointless anyway. When it's idling it's essentially just heating the coolant, and it's the oil you need to warm.

I live in some flats where the people above are elderly and they're also pretty toffy as you'd expect from cheltenham town centre.

Suffice to say, my warm up comprises of getting my bike away from the flat as quickly as possible and then blipping the throttle a few times to get the fast idle to engage. This gets it up to temp. Within 2 minutes of town rushour traffic on the A40, my engines at 70 degrees. By the time I hit the A40 golden valley bypass 2 miles from my house, it's already warmed up to 87 deg c. Engine speeds <5k rpm until I get to the bypass where I crank her open.

Your engine needs to be under load for it to "warm up". Think of when you're warming up to do exercises. Doing stretches is bollocks because you might be doing more harm than good by overexerting/stretching yourself. Better to do low intensity loads. Same with an engine.

It's not the engine that you need to worry about. It's your brakes and tyres!

Bikes have their own little ways about them, treat it as it responds best, better not to rev the arse of it cold but I fire mine up on full choke in the morning, pull off straight away and start choking off soon as Im off the drive then at the end of the road if its not a really cold day the chokes off before the end of the road but like I say bikes are all different Thumbs Up

For the SV I used a bit of choke, and when it revved freely and easily I set off.

For the ninja, I let it warm up to 40oC before I set off.

Then take it easy (although not all the time Laughing) for a little while.

Start bike and reverse out of garden, wait till temp actually registers/indicates 35 degrees... no idea why...just habit Neutral
Then ride carefully (read kept under 6k) until it shows up around 75.

I used to start teh zxr and cain the nuts off it. It hated it and acted like it was lean and didn't hit max revs if wasn't warmed properly.

I was young and stupid then and the excessive cam lobe wear I found confirmed my irresponsible behavior.

Nowadays with my machines I turn on, idle for a minute or two whilst I helmet up then ride off slowly keeping it gentle for 2/3 miles at least.

Get your gear on, start the bike full choke, full throttle until it starts to splutter then put the choke in while still full throttle, when engine stops with a thumb then get your gear off, get the bus to work and when you get home at night look on ebay for another bike but most of all remember not to take to seriously any advice you get from BCF Thumbs Up Very Happy Thumbs Up
LIke I said originally, you will find out what works best for your bike, there is no single answer Very Happy

Get bike out of garage.

Majority of the time I ride it down the garden, sometimes I let it idle when I get to the gate.

Then I put my helmet, gloves etc on.

Open door blahblahblah ride off.

But most of the time I actually turn the bike off when I get to the gate, unless i feel it needs it. Almost all of the time no choke needed, appart from when it hadn't been started for a week when been out in the cold garage Wink

Press starter and ride away.

There is a wax idle unit on my bike which makes it idle high for the first few minutes, means I can almost ride it without using the throttle Thumbs Up .

I ride it gently. By the time my temp is up, my tyres won't be far behind.

I actually start riding the thing before I have even hit the starter! I push the bike classic racing style to a small slope, where I hop on and hit the starter on the move, click first and I am away. ... not only does this minimize neighbor peeing off, but saves the clutch slightly too. .. Thumbs Up

as with all the other get on and ride posts, I ride it gently untill it has some heat in it.

I jump on the bike, start it and ride off like I would if it was warm! If I leave the bike to warm up by itself, it doesn't react right for the whole trip.

Also I'v never needed to use the choke once on my XR no matter how cold it gets.
