As title, what do you know about HDMI? From my last thread is blu-ray worth it, i've picked up a Sony E370 home cinema system.

I've always been one to use good cables for high quality sources. My old DVD player got treated to an expensive QED scart cable.

I was going to do the same for this blu-ray until reading the C-net HDMI cable overview they say as its digital there is no reason to buy an expensive cable.

Obviously the little man (in the sense he was male, he looked about 12 but i'll call him a man for the moment) in the shop says the 80quid cable gives much brighter colours than the 15quid cable. I left the shop with the 15 pound one. And I'm thinking of taking it back and getting a £4 one from amazon.

So what are your experiences of HDMI cables?

I'm told there isn't really any difference in the quality so i've always gone with the cheaper ones.
Can't justify spending crazy amounts of cash on something that i wouldn't notice a real difference on anyway.

I agree with TwoSock.

To me a cable is a cable.. it does a job. Yeah you can get oxygen free copper cable and fancy makes... But at the end of the day, it's still copper! the only difference is going to be the "Ohm" resistance of the copper. That's what they mean bu "superior quality". You won't notice the difference with digital at all, and barely any difference with analogue.

The only time i'll use a decent cable is if it has to go for a long run (example: 5m or more)

The sending equipment sends 1's and 0's down the cable and the receiving equipment receives 1's and 0's. Error correction is built into the HDMI specification.

So to summarise: buy the cheaper cables.

By spending £15 on a cable you have already failed, and failed hard.

Accept it and move on.

Different cables do give different results. Whether those results are worth the additional cost is another matter.

Indeed, and all these people saying gold plated is better. LOL Laughing

It's only better if the female contact is also gold plated, and even then the extended quality can be argued.

You have been lied to.

HDMI, Is a digital cable, data is carried in 1s and 0s, there is no way a more expensive cable will produce a brighter picture.

The theory behind more expensive cables, is that they may be less prone to errors.

A HDMI cable can carry more than 1 billion bits per second.

For a HDMI cable to be approved and licensed by the HDMI licensing body 1 error per 1 billion bits of data is exceptable. A 1 bit error will be imperceptible.

A blu-ray film displays nearly 50 million pixels on screen every second.

A blu-ray film at 1920x1080 (this is 2048000 bytes) * 24 frames per second = 49152000 bytes ) * 8 (8 bits in a byte) and you are looking at 393216000 bits per second. (So roughly 2.5 seconds and you will hit 1 billion bits).

Plus if there is an error, data correction, means you won't notice it.

For me a more expensive cable will be more solid, less likely to fall apart and I'd put in a more expensive cable if I was going to plaster over it in the wall. However I use a hdmi cable from a pound shop for my ps3 & my 360.

I've read a few articles on the subject and using a blind test, no one noticed a difference between the cables.

Quote from December's Computer Shopper who have a 3 page article on this very subject

"There was no consistent correlation between price and the perceived picture quality"

"There's no technical explanation we can find - or that the cable manufactures we spoke to could provide to justify claims that higher quality cables delver consistently better contrast skin tones and so on."

If you can hear or see a difference, there is a difference.

Even a placebo effect, is an effect. Thumbs Up

Really?

He said he used a scart cable for a dvd player.
He didn't say he was going to use it for his new blueray player. He said he was thinking about getting an expensive hdmi cable and then enquired about the better quality of expensive cables.
As opposed to expensive scart cables used to have better overall quality.
HDMI does not.

Blueray players don't even have scart sockets. They have HDMI and component video output.

I brought a cheap one for a quid = great quality
I brought a gold plated one for about 5 quid = same quality

I suppose the gold plated one will last longer but no real difference.
