In Nottingham...

Realised I ran out of MOT yesterday. I thought I read that it expired on the 20th.

Do I risk it by going on my motorbike? It's roughly a 10minute ride - Can probably make it less (by going the speed limit only officer Wink). Or do I revert to public transport and hope no-one stabs me?

I phoned the local MOT places this morning with no luck (no answer on any of them), am I flogging a dead horse trying to get an MOT today?

MOT means nothing until you get caught.

Same with roadtax.

You will be fine for a day.

Providing it is taxed, insured and roadworthy, you risk a non-endorsable fine for no MOT IF you get stopped.

This fine can be UP TO £1000 but is more often in the region of £30-40. You can't get points on your licence for no MOT.

I inadvertantly rode my VFR around for 2 months earlier this year with no MOT.

As long as the bike is taxed and insured id probably risk it - though if you have an accident you'll likely find your insurance is void in the event of you having no mot?

Feign surprise at the roadside and depending on the officer you'll likely get a warning as long as everything else is in order. If they check, which they won't.

Insurance cannot be voided for having no mot. Very Happy

Agreed. Your insurance policy will normally state the vehicle must be roadworthy, but an MOT is not a declaration of roadworthyness, just that it meets basic criteria.

A 10 min ride with no MOT is hardly a risk Laughing

You would have to be very unlucky to get caught and even if you did you would only pay a £60 fine. Just get an MOT booked asap and ride the bike if you need to.

Street Machine 196 derby rd stapleford ng9 7ay

no appointment necessary.. just turn up. but obviously to stay legal you will need to call them first. Always a good idea anyway,, just to ensure the chap who does the MOTs is actually there.

Sooner or later opinions fade and the name on the tank matters not. I think that happens somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear. Enjoy the ride... everything else takes care of itself.

If you pre book your appointment then you have an exemption to drive to the MOT centre without an MOT Thumbs Up Make sure you give them your reg though.

It does show up on the ANPR system and it also shows up on the police national computer if they do a check as the VOSA database is all computerised.

As said chances of getting caught are about 0.01% but for the sake of a phone call is it worth it.

Thanks for that, although called them and was advised the guy who does MOT's wasn't in today. Crying or Very sad

I've decided that I shall risk it, a 10min ride at 9.30pm and then at 6.20am will hopefully be ok, will just keep an eye out for the plod and duck down a sidestreet if I see them, although that may draw more attention Thinking The bike is fully taxed and insured (fully comp) so I'm road legal apart from the MOT status. Sadly can't use the excuse "I'm going to my MOT station now officer" at 10pm and 6pm..

I'll be able to get it MOT'd tomorrow which it will pass, just thought I had a few more days to go. Rolling Eyes

Thanks guys.

Went to the TT with no MOT on mine. That was after rushing around getting a mates bike tested too.
Didn't realise till a month later that mine had expired.

Here in NI we have to use a government test centre (as im sure you all know anyway)

Dunno if its a good or bad thing - I guess if you get a garage you can trust that would be the best option?

sorry for going off topic!

Our government care more about taking road tax than they do about your bike being roadworthy. For instance, there is no automated reminder/fining/ANPR system in place for vehicles without MOTs.

Forgot to pay car tax earlier in the year, cost me over £200 in fines. I could have been caught without an MOT and then beat up a stranger or been caught shoplifting for the fifth time before the fines even came close to that.

I've had a policy that specified that the vehicle must be MoT'd if over three years old.

You have to check the wording on each individual policy rather than just giving out sweeping statements.
