there used to be loads and I think there still are a few in military use. not looked into them thoroughly myself. I think I read of a 30bhp diesel in the American army or something? ____________________

Hayes diesel bikes as used per US and UK forces:
https://www.dieselmotorcycles.com/models.htm
105 mpg, 100 plus mph and a 630 mile tank range! Its the 630 mile tank range I like the best personally.
Granted they aren't sportsbikes, they developed the motors so the army could have a common fuel type - but they're much more advanced than the other diesel bikes available.
They're supposed to be unusually torquey and tractable from low revs, they peak at 38 Ib/ft at just 3000 rpm! Sounds nice.
Maybe in a few years they'll be appearing in military sales.
