Do it yourself - seriously!

There is only one person that can set your suspension up how you like it and that is you!

A suspension dude can only give you a generic setup, you will arrive at something better yourself.

Spend the dosh on some new tyres and follow this guide so you know what you are doing!!

Or give me £500 and I'll do it for you!! Very Happy

cool, you also need to consider that stock shocks tend to have far smaller range of adjustment than race shocks, limiting what can be done. ... you can make a notable difference, but paying someone when you can twiddle the same yourself seems to make little sense. ...

Paying somebody to do the work ONLY makes sense if your spring rates are completely out... OR if your suspension is knackered anyway and can do with a refresh.

The likes of KAIS (oop north) MCT (suffolk) HM Racing (sarf east/kent) will do it for you but a basic setup is in the region of £100! Crying or Very sad

I knew my front and rear were gone (30k miles in 10 years) so i opted to go to HM racing for a complete front and rear rebuild with different springs and weight oil. Transformed the bike because I wanted a bike that was rock solid and planted... which is what I got. Pricey though @ 600 quid!

Er, if your spring rates are out (as can be found by following steps in guide) then you can change them yourself too ...

I neither had the time, patience or tools to undo a set of USD forks AS well as removing the rear shock to take it apart, change the oil and repressurise with N2.

Gonna disagree on this one, my ZX9 was a an ill handling pig of a bike from the showroom, the front end was vague and had a habit of bottoming out over bumps mid corner, the shock did a fine jackhammer impression and routinely had me out of the seat, the rear end of the bike pumped and bucked under power and the whole thing did it's damnedest to run wide driving out of turns. In short, I was disgusted that a 4500 mile ZX9 was getting showed up by a tired old GS500 with 40k+ on the clock through the bends and bumps, it was shit and I was rapidly starting to hate it.

Handily for me a fairly local workshop offers setup sessions for 40 quid or so. I turned up, explained the bikes ills and then took a seat whilst he fiddled with it for a bit, he then had me take out for a quick spin to gauge the differences before he finished it off. As corny as it sounds, it honestly felt like the guy had woke the front end from the dead and chopped 50 kilos from it in the process. As well as getting the forks and shock dialled in right, he also tinkered with the ride height to speed the front end up, I get the odd cheeky little bit of headshake but it's not severe enough for me to start winding up the damper, easily a worthwhile trade off. Whilst I imagine I'd have eventually gotten there or thereabouts with the forks in the end but given my inexperience that would have been about as far as I'd have gotten.

So yeah, 40 quid to transform a bike from a wobbly bucking disappointment into the nimble ride I was hoping for in the first place? I'd say that's worth every penny. Mind you 100 would be borderline unless the guy had some trustworthy recommendations behind him.
