Router being an awkward little bitch. Port Forwarding?

Hey guys.

Running a Netgear DGN2000 router at the moment. We 'should' have a fairly rapid connection - but tbh, even with both laptops off games are still quite laggy online, and without the PS3/360 on, websites are still fairly slow, streaming isnt particularly fast, and neither are downloads.

Now apparently there's nothing wrong with our ISP - I must admit, on occasion we jump up to 400kbps download. But usually nothing about 200.

My 360 has also just decided to be a wanker, and MW2 has a moderate NAT - before this it was always open.

I 'think' (not certain, Im not really that savvy with this stuff) the router might be strangling connections somehow.

Is there any simple way to sort my problem? (Worth an ask ) But if not, are there any step by step guides for port forwarding etc that might sort out our net. Its really frustrating getting only half the service we pay for.

I've checked for the latest firmware via the router and all is apparently up to date.

Anyone had experience with these issues, I'd be grateful of a helping hand.

Based in Hull - KC (Kingston Communications) have a monopoly on this area - we cannot get another Broadband provider or I would have switched long ago.

I went on Portforward but when I chose my router it only offered a paying option....is there a free option or something?

Has the connection ever been fast with this router?

I'd be tempted to reset it using the button on the back and start from scratch. If you go into the main screen you should have some info telling you what speed the ADSL is connected at. If it's pretty high and you're still getting slow download speeds then it's either your ISP or the router throttling speeds.

If the router is throttling then it will probably be under a section called Bandwidth or Quality of Service somewhere.

If you look at the speed the router is connected at, for every 1Mbps/1000Kbps (note the small b = bits) you should be downloading at roughly 120KB/sec (large B = bytes).

port forwarding allows you to pick a hole in router to allow conections from outside to use some internet based service.

I'd try resetting the router first.
There should not be any speed restrictions or "bottle necking" on default router settings.
Average computer people buy these and they would not make a penny if they required tweaking to the max and thousands of settings adjusted to get on the net properly

If that doesn't work is there any chance you can borrow a router off a friend or something just to test if it's the ISP?
If it's still slow with new router it's very likely it's your ISP.

Either that or if you're using micro filters on the line.

Ah, the microfilters thing is a good point. If you haven't already, try disconnecting everything from the phone socket and just plug your router straight into the phone socket using a microfilter - nothing else. Then see if it's any quicker.
