Is my bike legal?

Hello, i had a small accident on my bike the other day, its back wheel slide out. The damage was the ball on the end of the front brake lever was broken off, the end of the left handle bar was knocked off and the end of the throttle and grip is a bit ripped but not to bad and the back brake lever is bent a bit. Is this bike legal to ride in the UK or what do i have to repair asap. Thank you very much.

Doubt you would get fined but it wouldn't pass MOT.

You have to have full leavers for the mot and your grips have to be secure. But as previously said dout you would get pulled.

Although if you did damage to both the left and right hand sides then I would want to check that that really is all of the damage since doing both side pretty much requires the bike to have rolled over.

Thank you for the replys, all the damage was on the right side and not the left. i am going to replace the bits when i have the money but if i can get away with riding it atm then its not so much of a must do now. Thanks =)

I rode my old GPZ for a number of months with the ball end missing from the brake lever.
No problem with the legal or functional side of day to day riding, but as has been said, it's an MOT failure when testing time comes.

OK thank you. do you have any tips for riding in the wet. it is also a bit inconvenient seeing as my confidence has dropped by a lot

Just be smooth with everything, especially the brakes.

Also as tempting as cheap tyres may be, a good set of tyres make a lot of difference in the wet, I am still surprised at the amount of lean I can get in the wet, and my tyres are pretty crap, still Dunlop rather than a Chinese brand though.

i think my bike is strange because the grip was reasonable when it was icy and snowy yet terrible in rain.

I suspect a police officer would nail the rider on 'construction and use' as the missing ball represents a sharp edge in exactly the same manner as rusted panels on a car.

I'm pretty sure you can just stick a ball of duct tape on the end to satisfy the legal requirement. Someone on here does it before MOTs.

You can get levers for very little £ if you look on ebay, etc. HG used to do 'plain' levers for £3 and ones with adjusters for £6; don't know if they still do.

Get a new lever if you're worried (I've been riding around on a c90 with a broken lever, no indicators, that I think has '999' on the front and side of it for a while and not being pulled yet!)

You should be able to bend the back brake lever into shape. I took mine off and heated it with a painters blowtorch and tweaked it straight. When i bent the footrests on my CG i used a 2m scaffolding pole. It was later on that i realised they were attatched to the engine. I could've done some damage.

You probably won't get pulled for a blobless lever, but for the sake of a fiver i'd change it.

My mate crashed his dt and snapped the brake lever off, so we just duck taped an old spanner to what was left of the lever, It worked fine but he got pulled and had to get his bike re mot'd(I lol'd at his misfortune) although the spanner as a lever was the tip of the iceberg, that thing was a deathtrap . It took him something stupid like 8 attempts to get it mot'd in the first place.

I'm sure you'll be fine, but if you want peace of mind get them replaced.

if it's just the ball missing off the end then its not a problem, you don't need them for mot & they are not a legal requirement

as long as the remainder of the leaver is long enough to be used easily & stops you effectively

my armstrong passed it's MoT three years in a row with a broken front break leaver & I belive the guy who has it now still has the broken leaver on it

the ball ends are only a requirement for race use

like you say it's down to the tester but the guy who does mine is pretty strict, he failed it on something new every year, even stuff he'd passed the year before, but never the leaver

as long as it's secure & long enough to work safely & stops the bike properly it's ok

if half the leaver is missing then that's a different kettle of fish
