As the title.
I'm looking at a winter bike.
Maybe longer if it works out as a standby/alternative.

Anyhow, it has an old Rickman style fairing. Not actually a rickman, no name or manufacturer on it.
It's just a big fibreglass fairing but it does a job so like to keep it.

However, the perspex shield is broken and crazed (stress lines) so I'd like to replace. Trouble is I don't know where to source this.

The perspex is quite thick, say about 5mm and shaped and drilled to fit onto the fairing. The original may be able to be used as a template.

Can anyone give me any help, advice and / or clues as to replacing.

I'll try and post some pics this pm if I can get to the computer and camera.

Thanks in anticipation.

You could try your local college. Most of them have CNC laser cutters, and possibly lathe's. You never know, they might be kind and let you use them.

Well even if it is far fetched, it's worth a shot.

Thumbs Up this.

You'll be surprised at the kit that schools and colleges have. I got my little brother to vacuum form some stuff before, and I know his teacher had made screens for his bike in there before too.

You can buy perspex in just about any size and thickness on eBay. It's easily cut with a hacksaw then shaped with a paint-stripper gun - you may even be able to do it with a hairdryer. I've made up several screens this way.

Thanks for that. Will search ebay this evening.

I was a little worried about cutting in case it shattered/split.

Will also need drilling for mounting.
I'm assuming mask up with tape and then drill with wood drill.
I'm also thinking slow speed as fast would melt it?

Ta.

I would aviod Perspex, (acrylic) as it can shatter, and as you have found, craze. Polycarbonate is much better.
If your original screen is still in once piece the new one, if small enough, can be heated in your oven till it is 'floppy' then moulded on the inside of the old one.

Any type of plastic material should be drilled at a very slow speed, plastic doesn't conduct heat as metal does and it is very easy to overheat either the plastic or the drill bit. As an aside, metal polish can be used to buff out light scratching and hazing on perpex, best to try a test piece before really going for it!
