Finally passed MOD1

Hello,


So after failing my mod1 on the 28th of October I was pretty downed. Especially after only failing because i overshot the box.

So, I rebooked and eventually got one for today, the 9th of November.

So, after yesterday was nice and sunny I thought today would be good. But after waking up and looking out my window, I thought: fuck!

But I have to get on with it eh!?!

So, after having a microwave curry at 11am, I got my docs and stuff ready and prepared to be out of the house by midday to give me plenty of time.

So, away I go, on the way I filled up the fuel by £7. The journey there was damn freezing let me tell you. I didn't have much starting control with extra thick skiing gloves on either but I knew it'd be cold. The wind was blowing me all over the place and the bike was really struggling. So after getting there I turned the fuel tap off and ignition etc and went inside pronto because it was brass monkeys at this point.

Got inside, sat down, a couple of people were there waiting for their tests. I sat down by an instructor and his student who was an nice lady nervous as hell she was. All the while the instructor talking about how it's no good wearing jeans and you gotta be suited and booted. There I was in my fleese and jeans .

The woman did her test, failed on the figure of eight. She went, and a girl came turned in with her scooter. She had a story to tell that she:

Failed mod1,
passed mod1,
Mod1 certificate was invalid because her bike had been struck off the A2 list even before she had her test (instructor didn't look it up).
And there she was here for the 3rd time and she passed.

Anyway, I being the only biker at this point was just sitting their shivering. Then I was called.


I went in the room and did the usual Form declaration and stuff like that. Got outside to collect my bike and push her around to the side. Came out of the building and an instructor and student were looking at my bike as if they were mocking it or something. Just standing there looking at it talking about it. I said hello, the instructor said at night I must see the aeroplanes because the light is directed in such a way. I don't see anything wrong with it tbh, looks okay to me. But little did they know, that infact, the bulbs that are inside of it have been blown along time ago and I only replace the bulbs if i need to go out at night (swapping them around again when i've come home).


Went out, got on the bike started her up. Went inside the arena nervously. The examiner was a different one from last time.

Did the moving of the bike exercise okay as anyone should
And then went on my way with the slalomn. Did it alright, went through to the figure of eight and felt like an age doing it, went around for the last cone and a little judder from the bike and I thought that was it. But a little more right hand and I was away again.

Now for the swerve. I did the same left hand circuit as I did last time. This little bugger got me on the stop the other time. So off i went, more gingerly than last time and I almost hit the cone on the exit of the corner but went through the swerve and got inside the box okay. So, I did it good.

Then the U turn, left and right check, forward, right check and turn. Good did it successfully. Stopped, the examiner then telling me my next exercise. Suddenly. The bike went quiet, hmm. Looked at the tap. Fuuuuu, it was turned OFF! Forgot about turning it on reserve for the module (just incase). But. My god what an amateur mistake. But I am only lucky and thank that it only died at this point and not later like the slow ride!!

Anyway, after some nervous laughter and stuff I went on and Did the slow walk successfully. Next is the emergency stop. I did this very well last time. So off i go, around that corner again pin it, and as his hand is raised. Right hand forward closing the throttle and enabling the brake, at the same time pushing down at the rear brake gently. For some reason, and I did this last time, I also put the bike into neutral while stopping- I know that doing this, is not advised. So, after i'd stopped, left and right shoulder check.

The examiner comes over and said that I only did 46kmph on the swerve but my emergency stop was alright at 50kmph. So, he told me I needed more and I get a second chance. So off I go again,
Did the corner, did the swerve, prepared to stop, accelerator still on when braking, but just pulled the clutch in and pulled the brake harder still while the engine was revving away. as i was rolling and was confident i could stop in the box I let the revvs go back down. Stopped in box, fine.

The examiner with no expression on his face about my result, said he'd open the gate and I was to park inbetween the cones outside the arena. So I did, engine off, keys taken with me, Inside.
He said to go and wait, so I waited by the door for more time than I would like to be waiting if i'd have failed. But got inside, and he said i'd passed.

Thank god! That's all I can say, rode home with a smile and still quite cold. But not as much wind as earlier.
So there we have it. Pretty pleased I've finally done it, the journey was a killer going and coming back. It's only 15 miles but it's mainly main, open roads of 40 and 50 mph.

Still bloody freezing aswel, I'm watching star wars episode 2 (5) on a cloned VHS, and typing this at the same time.

Bravo! Nice to see that you were pretty cool about the fuel tap stuff and didn't let that ruin your chances Get your mod 2 booked soon before it starts to get bloody cold and invest in some toasty gloves. Mod 2 is the easier one too!

Thinking about it, I did my CBT and it rained. The mod 1 I passed it rained. It utterly piddled it down for my mod 2. Does it make you a better rider? Possibly not but I do know how to keep warm and dry now!

Now to focus on the mod 2. I found it helpful, rather than thinking negatively ("I just have to not fuck up"), to think positively ("I know I'm a good rider, I just have to show this gadge for half an hour that's the case").

I was pretty relaxed and it all worked just fine

I would definitely recommend some decent gear though, especially if you're doing the test during winter. Makes such a difference to be relatively warm, comfy and dry. I saw one guy doing DAS in trackie-b's and trainers, must have been freezing. I was nice and toasty in my thermal-lined waterproof textiles and waterproof(ish) boots tho. If you've got the right gear, you give yourself a great headstart - one less thing to worry about.

Well done mate, just the final hurdle now, get it booked as soon as possible! And listen to Bob about the positive thinking thing. I was really nervous on my first test and failed for a silly mistake. On my second I was pissing confidence. Passed easily.

You're doing your Mod 2 at Newport aren't you? If you ever feel like braving the cold, give me a shout and I'll show you the test routes/give you some pointers that helped with my test.
