Dropbox is basically a service that lets you synchronize files online and with other computers. You install a small client application on your desktop and select a folder that will be your DropBox folder. Anything that you put in that folder will be synchronized with the online server and any other computer in which you have installed the client.

It is a very useful little application. I use it to keep my work files up to date in several computers, and even the source code of my programs (change your development folder to a folder inside your dropbox folder and the source code will be updated in real time among your mahcines).

I still need like 28 people to be able to get all the free bonus space they give.

you can use it like.

anything you put in the dropbox folder will be uploaded to a server in the internet (DropBox). then anytime you install the client tool on a computer and attach it to your user name and password, it will download any files you have in your dropbox.

It will not back up your whole computer, just any files you put in that folder. The free version gives you 2gbs right away and then if you get other people to sign up, you will get bonus space for each person up to a maximum of 8gb I think.

If you get the BETA client tool, you can even select which files/folder you want to download without downloading the whole thing. For example, you could have personal and work folders in your dropbox, but only download/sync the one you want on a given computer.

Got it.
So if I upload, say, a manuscript from my phone into Dropbox, it will hold it there, and make it available to my computer (provided I have the application installed in both places)

And then if I upload a more recent copy of the same manuscript, and tell it to overwrite the old one, will it make the new one available on both phone and PC as well?

What happens though if you accidently delete a file in your dropbox folder?
Does it then get deleted on all other computers aswell?

Hm in the UK that would be .ac.uk for an academic instution including a school or university. Not sure if they support those but I plugged in my work email (I work at a uni) and it seemed to accept it and sent a verification.

Edit: Yep it works.

I use it to swap files with my g/f and other bods. Easier than FTP and has PC/Mac compatibility. Top program.

I use it daily for transferring files from my phone to PC and vise versa. If I am out of the office and need a particular file, I can just download it to my phone.

Makes iPhoney ownership that little bit easier to stomach.

I have it on my laptop, iPad and HTC Wildfire. Makes transferring pictures etc so easy.

I have used Dropbox for a year or so. My (in retirement) job is lecturing in companies all around the world. Normally I send the PowerPoint slides and document texts to the company in advance of my visit by loading them into Dropbox and getting the local guys to open their own Dropbox account to get access. Works a treat with (typically) file sets of up to 300MB and is ZERO COST to me. Sending files on CD takes a week by courier and costs around £70.

Also note, you don't HAVE to install the software on your computer(s) to use it.

I just use the web interface by logging in to the website which works good enough for me.

I have it already but didnt know about the education email, i now have 3.2gb of space

excellent. the software integration into the Finder window for mac is just awesome too.
