So after months of putting up with the problems that the Xperia X10 suffers from, I have finally accepted defeat and had enough.

Not only have they made us wait forever and a day to make it to a version of Android that other phones are now moving away from, but the 2.1 update has actually made the phone worse.

So that's it, enough is enough. I'm giving up on this wank phone and heading into the city to get an HTC Desire HD tomorrow. But before I do, does anyone have one yet and if so are there any major flaws with it that I should be made aware of?

Below is a copy of the email (it actually ends up just being a sarcastic rant, but ho hum!) I have just sent to Sony Ericsson support, I will be interested to see what, if anything they propose to do.

Quote:
Hi,

Earlier this year I purchased a sim free X10i. I am a vodafone pay monthly customer and use my vodafone sim in the phone.

When running android 1.6 there was multiple issues with sending SMS that were longer than 2 sms in length. If you tried to send an SMS that was 3 pages or longer it would come back as a send fail and I would have to edit the text to be under 3 sms in length. This is obviously very frustrating as I have old phones that are probably 10 years old that could handle this most basic of functions. I have also had issues sending and receiving MMS messages too, although this was an intermittent problem.

And before you suggest that I ensure that I have the correct SMS and MMS settings for vodafone installed on my phone, I do, as sometimes if the wind is blowing in just the right direction and there is a full moon, these messages will send.

So lets now fast forward to last weekend. I checked my phone in the morning when I got up to see that the new Android 2.1 update was available. Great I thought, maybe all the annoying bugs and glitches will be gone from my phone and I might actually be able to start enjoying it.

So I updated it with no problems.........I thought.

Even though I followed the installation instructions to the letter, for some reason your backup and restore app decided that it only needed to back up a small number of my contacts. So when I performed the restore after the update, it only gave me back about 10 of my old contacts. So thanks for that, I now have the task of trying to contact people who's number I don't have, which as I'm sure you can appreciate, is not going to be too easy.

Now comes my biggest problem. The SMS and MMS functions on the phone are now as good as un-usable on both the stock messaging client and the 3rd party app that I prefer to use. I would like to point out again that yes, I am sure I have the correct settings for Vodafone installed on my phone.

Where as before, as long as I made sure the SMS was under 3 SMS's in length I could guarantee the message would be sent, now it is completely at random. It makes no difference what length the message is, if it decides to fail that is it. It won't resend and more often than not, even if I delete the failed message and retype it so its a different length, it will still fail. So sometimes it takes me up to an hour to send an SMS!!! Is this what I as a customer, should expect from you? Maybe in future I should just send a message in a bottle or a carrier pigeon, because to be quite honest this is surely going to be a much quicker and more reliable way of gettting messages to people than this complete farce of a mobile phone I had the misfortune of parting with my hard earned cash for, and at £460 it wasn't cheap either.

I took the time to research on the internet and see if I was the only person experiencing these issues, and it turns out that I'm not. This issue is all across the Vodafone forums with disgruntled customers annoyed that in 2010 you can have a phone that has an app for just about every mundane task possible, but at the cost of not being able to perform basic and common features that phones have been managing to do for the last 10 years.

Normally I would have gone to Vodafone and taken up the issue with them as I would have thought it was a problem with their software, but this is an unbranded, sim free phone so I'm now making this your problem.

In updating to Android 2.1 I have as good as made my phone useless. So there maybe HD video recording and 5 home screens to fill with pointless apps, but to be honest I would give that all up again just to be able to send messages both as long and as frequently as I like, not when the phone decides it wants too.

I trust that you will treat this matter as a priority, because as it stands I will never buy or use another Sony Ericsson phone ever again, not if it was for free, not as a joke and not even for a dare.

I look forward to your response.

Yeah the size isn't really an issue for me, although thin the X10 isn't exactly small. I prefer to feel like I'm holding a phone in my hand and not a childs toy.

I haven't looked into it much but I assume it is the same as the Desire but with a bigger better screen.

The normal desire, I thought was big when I got it but I am used to it now. I imagine the HD will feel massive in your hands but should be awesome.

Awesome phones, more potential than you can imagine.

I hope you are on android forums, look at some of the custom stuff you can do with it.

SMS longer than 3 pages!? I am not saying the phone should not handle it, but I think I would just rather make a one minute call to say all that instead of having to type it.

also, you might want to try sending a similar SMS from a phone with a similar OS as yours, or the one you are going to get to make sure it is not and OS problem, but the phone.

No not yet, because to be honest with all the problems I've had with even the most basic functions of the X10, I haven't really felt like exploring the posibilities of Android just yet. Will have to see how I get on with the HTC.

Well I am one of those people who would prefer to text rather than call, plus often the people I am sending long sms's to are at work and can't take a phone call anyway. But thats all irrelevant, if I want to send a text thats 10 pages long, I should be able to! I'm a fully grown man goddamn it!

Also this is a known issue with the X10 on Vodafone as it is an ongoing issue that doesn't seem to be being dealt with on the Vodafone forum. Apparently other networks don't have any of these problems when tested.

As I said in my mail to S.E if I had got the phone from Vodafone, I would take it up with them as I would have thought it would be an issue with their firmware, but I bought the phone sim free without the Vodafone firmware so it's obviously a bug between X10's in general and Vodafone.

The problem is I'm still tied into my contract with Vodafone for about another 12 months so it's not like I can just cancel my contract and go with another network who I know would work with the phone.

LOL! that part in bold is just awesome!

as I said, I was not trying to excuse the phone at all or why you were doing that. It was more a personal thing that I would go nuts typing so much.

I still think you should ask someone that has a phone with android to send a similar size text to make sure it is not the OS itself. I am not sure there are many people who send texts that long. I would offer to do the test for you, but I dont have an android phone.

I know what your're saying, but like I've said, it happened on Android 1.6 and its now happening on Android 2.1, but only on Vodafone with the X10. I've seen a few different accounts on other forums where people have tried sending the same messages on O2, orange etc etc with no issues whatsoever, but as soon as a Vodafone sim goes into it, game over!

Either way my minds pretty much made up on this one now. It's getting replaced!

By the way, I was not trying to make up your mind against replacing it. Just wanted to make sure your expectations were set so you do not get disappointed if the same SMS problem happens with the new phone.

Think the Desire HD has a very low battery life like most Smartphones.

I have got a Samsung Galaxy S and finding it hangs like a c*nt compared to my Hero and both have froyo installed.

HTC phones in my experience suffer from screen issues, i had to send my Hero and my misses HD2 back for repair as the screens went wrong, basically you tap the top and the bottom of the screen responds.

Thanks Stevie, that's good to know. Might have to hold fire for a few months and see what known issues develop for the desire HD and also how quickly they're resolved.

And Carl, git tae fuck ya bawbag!

I'd not go with the HD myself, although it's a larger screen it's not AMOLED or SLCD and still only 480x800, same as the Desire. Internal memory is nice, the newer snapdragon is possibly quicker rendering 3D graphics (but not by much) and the battery life isn't great.

I've played with a few of the 4"+ phones and it's not a case of holding something that feels like a phone, it's more like holding a tablet PC to the side of your head.

My brother just got a Desire HD and loves it. Thumbs Up It looks massive until you put a HD & the standard Desire next to each other and the difference isn't great.

I was almost tempted to go on a McGee stylee rant about the X10, but maybe you got 1 from a bad batch? i dont want to jinx mine but between bouncing it down a few roads in various weathers without a scratch never mind reboot and relying on it as a multitool of sorts while broken down 1 night in the country with the lass, my best mate got one shortly after me an his is also a godsend.

My problem is (ironically) i cant get the 2. upgrade, orange refer me to SE site which swears blind iv got latest; 1.6 so i dunno. I only got the thing for said update which was supposed to make the X10 multi-touch.. iv not even played with it in anyway incase it doesnt happen so i can send it back and re-evaluate Sad

BTW, its not /big/ its just packed full of awesomeness an u dont get quality in small packages Razz

Don't want to have to be the one to shit in your cereal, but the 2.1 update doesn't make the x10 multi touch. I thought that was going to happen too, got the 2.1 update and Voila! Exactly the same!

I got the Desire HD in the end, and it sickburps all over the X10's gooch imo.
