LCD or plasma?

How do you decide Confused

they both have there pro's and cons but its gonna be my first good tv so i want to chose wisely .

So i call upon the geeks of bcf to help me! Smile

Im after 42" - 50"

I just wanna know weather to go plasma or lcd?

First off, make sure the size you get matches the size of the room and how far away you are sitting.

The closer you are the more you want LCD. Plasma isn't as sharp but better if you want a big tv to be watched from a distance.

Plasma looks better. LCD is only for little things like 32". Big LCD is not as good as big plasma.

Go into a shop of TVs all showing the same thing. The LCD TVs will be the ones looking flat and lifeless.

Don't go in shops, showing bad settings and shared feeds etc ...

Got to avforums with budget and useage requirements, and you will be pointed to the best and what you need, from a place well thought of .... Idea

A mate of mine bought a 42" Pioneer Plasma TV and found it had three power settings (?). Found the top (best) setting used about as much power as an electric fire, shook him a bit so knocked it down to the middle setting. Would have been better-off buying a , much cheaper, LCD of the same size. This is not personal experience, just what he's told me.

To be fair i wanted a 1080p with a higher hz but i couldnt really afford an extra 150 nicker.

Do you guys rekon this will be ok?

Its got 100hz which i read aboive 60 the eye cant see anyway i just hope i dont get motion blur in films and games.

Although compared to my sdtv at the mo its gonna be amazing! i cant read the font on any of my xbox games!

I played BF2 on ma 40" LCD at 60Hz just fine, no motion blur or anything.

Plasma technology sucks, everyone I've known whos had (or has) one always goes on about "burn-in" or ghosting. They're heavy, use loads of power and are more difficult to fix if something goes wrong.

Plus sometimes I think people buy a Plasma because "plasma" sounds cool.. 'tards.

What is the power consumption of these big sets though?
I'd expect that's one area the LCDs are better.
I suppose if it's not on much it's not a big isssue, but if you have OAPs in the house all day or kids it can be on for half the day.

Their better nowadays, and lcds are great too, but plasmas still are the best, lcds are catching up .. i just get annoyed when see peeps propagating this plasma myth ... esp when concerning screen burn etc ... Rolling Eyes

LCDS are like 4T 125s, and lcds plasma like 2T stroke .. cost more but outperform by some way ... Cool

42 inch plasma are great for standard definition, and not too shabby with HD ..... you need a 50 inch plasma with BR film to see the full benifit of 1080 P ...

The OP will enjoy his TV, esp as LG have made big strides in recent years, and arguably offer the best bang for buck ... although i think his model must be the botom of the range ... same money at richer sounds would of seen him better off ... Thumbs Up

Just a snippet ...

Ask him if he knows what a colour gamut is and tell him to look at comparitive AVF reviews.
Also the cotnrast ratio claimed for LCD/LED sets is based on zone switching. With plasmas it is pixel by pixel.
Oh, LCD/LED power consumption is more or less constant. Plasmas, being emissive devices, use a LOT less power in dark scenes.

They don't caus they have pixel shift and anti image burn technology, and not leaving it on too long is not too much to ask for a better TV ...

It's on avforums caus you know fuck all and your initial post on the subject is hurting the feelings of plasma owners everywhere !!! Thumbs Up

Really just repeating myself, hence the change.. maybe plasma has changed over the last year or two but the basic technology behind it doesn't work for me.. really they're just covering up inherent problems with their new technologies. I'm more of a purist Wink

Image retention is what you speak of .. screen burn is permanent, and is what some old sets done when left for varied amounts of times depending on brand TV /make ...

Tis why you have new anti retention and BURN tek .. and better advice for plasma owners ... Thumbs Up

I also hazard a guess, that some chavs with big plasmas from bright house, who can't read .... after bragging about their ' plasmas ' .. then went balistic at anyone who would listen, that their 1000 quid TV they paid 2 k for is FURBAR ... Idea

Just watched F1 qualifying on my plasma, perfect is all I can describe it as.

My kids play Xbox 360 on the plasma, I set it to gaming mode when they do, never seen any retention, even after several hours use at a time.
