So erm yeah anyone here play/experiment with cellular automation such as conway's game of life or brian silverman's wireworld.

Regards

Had the 'Life' game on the Amiga years ago, from a cover disk on a computer magazine from 1989/90. Was based on quite simple logic about how the cells would divide, die etc. Fun to watch all the pretty patterns develop but that's all I can really remember.

No ... but was intrigued, so read up on the rules and running an experiment now! Cool

"The universe of the Game of Life is an infinite two-dimensional orthogonal grid of square cells, each of which is in one of two possible states, live or dead. Every cell interacts with its eight neighbours, which are the cells that are directly horizontally, vertically, or diagonally adjacent. At each step in time, the following transitions occur:

Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbours dies, as if by loneliness.

Any live cell with more than three live neighbours dies, as if by overcrowding.

Any live cell with two or three live neighbours lives, unchanged, to the next generation.

Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours comes to life.

The initial pattern constitutes the 'seed' of the system. "

Here is the first seed ... (start state is the bottom one, top one is the final state after 150 generations).

Life seems to reach a steady state at ~130 generations ...

Ok, second start state at the bottom, top end state. Life seems to reach steady state about 160 generations on this one ...

Good if not slightly geeky fun this!! Very Happy

yer it is a bit geeky lol....

Goly's hashlife is a good cross-platform program you can use to explore Linky. comes with plenty of demo's and is quite easy to use, also does lots of other rules for cellular automation.

Cool ... but I am a bit bored now after this last one!! Very Happy

Basically I wondered how I would evolve so I constructed cells spelling out 'BLUE SV' ....

Run it for >250 generations and unlike the other two experiments - that stopped evolving ~100 generations earlier - I am still evolving Cool

Here is a screen-shot with it at 256 generations - note, in a non steady state - and an upward trend-line! Thumbs Up

Edit:-

Ran it until it reached steady state, it was 320 generations - and I stopped evolving Sad ... this is how BLUE SV ends up in >=320 lifetimes Confused

I made a 'Game of life' with Excel macros many years ago when bored, waiting for some software to repeatedly install (documenting install process.)
