Hi guys

I'm new here, but have been lurking round for a while.

Bit of background on me 23 years old passed my DAS two years ago and had to sell my aprilia rs125 to get married six months down the line and have been bikeless since.

I've finally decided to get back on the road and thought about getting a bike now as prices are fairly low compared to summer. I've only ridden a 125 other than for my DAS but figured I'd get a six as I'll only get bored six months down the line.

I'm fairly short only 5'8-9" so can't do trailies really and have been looking at bandits, hornets, sv and fazers. Budget of 1000-1500. My no claims lapsed so can't afford anything sporty . Was interested in hornets as they're cheap but wondered what you guys thought. Also is 25k alot on them? Like the bandits but heard the finish on them is to be desired specially as most of them have been subjected to the lovely salt on our roads.

I have a car so will be used for the odd commute and leisure ride. And in all honesty won't be used the majority of the time (unless I really get the bug bad again!!)

I'm not mechanically minded but don't mind fetling a little.

The sit up 600's are all of a muchness really with very little difference in performance and riding position. They all have the same benifits of cheap insurance and parts and their droppability factor makes them a great first big bike. They dont bleed as much when they fall over.

Depending on what you want to use the bike for I'd suggest heading down to your local dealers and have a seat on as many as you can to get the feel. If your using the thing for fun then a naked one would be great fun. If your using it for long hauls and commuting I'd go for the Fazer as its half faired and offers some wind resistance.

As for the milage. Providing the bike is looked after and serviced regularly enough then theres no harm in high milage from the Jap bikes. They are built to last. With that kind of milage you might want to check when the last major service was done and when the chain and sprockets were last replaced.

Providing the bikes been serviced regularly milage is pretty irellevent. The GSXR I rode around on was 19 years old and had done 36K miles but because the guy that owned it was a mechanic and had the engine stripped and fully rebuilt the thing was as sweet as a nut.

Last week I bought myself a VTR and a mate of mine who works on twins said the engine sounded one of the best he's heard. Its done 27K miles but has a service history showing what works been done.

Sitting on them is most important if you're doing a long run, as is a half-fairing. Make sure you're happy with the riding position. As I always say in these cases, I didn't like the Bandit as I found the pegs were too high. You might find them perfect.

For your budget I'd worry about the condition more than the mileage. If it's been looked after well, that's the key thing.

Bandit<SV<Fazer<Hornet IMO

Low mileage is obviously a plus but I would rather have service history.

Guys anyone reading this feel free to come rescue me. I'm currenty typing this with my tongue in paxo's basement. dont ask how I have managed to rig up internet access. lets just say some of paxo's experiments with circit boards and fibre optic tubing are eye watering!

i wouldnt automatically disregard trailie/sm types.
im 5ft 9 & manage perfectly well on my R30. the sitting upright seating position makes a nice change & its cheap to insure but is a lot of fun to ride.

ccm 604,rotax 600cc single cylinder, fitted with 17 inch wheels & road tyres.
when new, you had the option of getting 2 sets of wheels, so you could use it off road. (2 bikes in 1 )
its light,pretty reliable,fast enough for motorway use (though obviously not as fast as a sports bike) simple to maintain & to "tune". standard i think its around 50bhp but mines was dyno'd at 65bhp with only a different exhaust,air filter & a bit of "fettling".
was never a bike i had thought of buying tbh, bit i kinda "inherited" it & now find it a hoot to ride. (i actually prefer riding it to any of my other bikes- mostly the "sportsbike" type)
being left handed i love the fact it kick starts on the left. (& its British!!!)
