I have been using a race scrub supercorsa on the rear of my road SV, works fine.

It is getting to the end of its 3rd life now, so have been starting to think about getting a replacement ... now my problem is this :-

It is winter time and although the supercorsa do the job, the lack of side thread makes them far from an ideal winter/all weather tyre (they do work surprisingly well in all weathers mind).

So get a new sports touring tyre right?!!?

Well yes, but I have 3 race scrubs sat about 'going off' (and begging) that I could use, they all have 'as good as new' in the centre ... I find it hard to justify spending out >£100 for a new sports touring rear.

Does anyone else run race scrubs on the road year round?!

With minimal tread id imagine you would be fine until you hit standing water or heavy rain?

They are absolutely fine actually, just as long as you are not too far over!! Smile

Where is that vid I have of supercorsas in the wet {click click click}

here it is:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S336ZXmwJ6Q

Admittedly that is on track not on the road, but you get the idea that supercorsa's work fine in the wet (as long as you keep in the treaded bit) Smile

It's pretty damn rare for bikes to aqua plane, though tread does help to warm the tyre up and helps with aqua planing, though suspect it's only when you get to race wets that it makes a big difference.

I often use supercorsa through winter (couple of years ago in the snow and doing fine) as they have very good grip from cold.

I'm not sure the supercorsa side tread is a big issue as far as water goes - no way I'd lean that far on the road in the wet anyway.

I'd be worried about running maxxis intermediate wet-style pattern tyres, nevermind road tread Razz.

As they are scrubs that have had 2 lives already (i.e. I buy them 2nd hand, then wear them down until they are unacceptable on the track, then they go on the road bike) they do lack some of the furthest out tread or at least it is very shallow as that is the area that gets a hammering on the track.

But yes, stay in the deeper treaded area and they seem fine!! Cool

Will be running a set of supercorsa race scrubs this winter.

Soft front and a Med rear.

I usually use road legal race scrubs, but last time I had fresh new tyres of a harder lower quality compound .

Race scrubs are about a third of the price, and being softer rubber, they do wear out faster, but I'd say they have a lot more than a third of the life. More like 3/4 of the life.

So they are good value. The softer rubber makes them more grippy, not more slippy.

Bearing in mind I already have them, race scrubs cost (owe) me nothing ... so it makes it even harder to buy new touring tyres when I have race scrubs knocking about (and this is where we came into this thread!! Wink).

Just use the scrubs!

I would if i had a constant supply. Had much less in the way of iffy moments on the scrubs than on any road biased tyres.

Ive been using Metzeller reacteks on the TL during the last 2 months. These are ex race scrubs and have been fantastic.
Only had one "moment" on standing water on the M1, it spun the rear up in every gear!

Seeing as i can't actually get any heat into my BT021r's at all(literally... they are bone cold when i get home)

Would the soft nature of race scrubs get heat into the tyre even in the wet? I have a mate i could probably nab some off.

Also does anyone know if race wets are legal? they'd be immense on the road.

Very few race wets are road legal. Think Avon makes one, but then Avon doesn't make great race wets in my experience.
They are often used for 'general' use on lighter bikes, but I'd expect them to get Mullered on a sports bike. You can easily go from new to knackered in ten laps on track with a race wet in the dry.

Race scrubs probably won't get heat in to the tyre quicker - but choose the right ones and they are much grippier from cold, so it's much less of an issue.

Oh and I read that as mr_fisty was riding the Yamaha M1 and thus wasn't surprised he was spinning it up with standing water!

Never tried race scrubs myself so can't comment on 'grippyness' but to the poster that moaned about BT021s - I would say replace them with BT023s if you can.

Great grip levels in cold and wet. No bother on wet overbanding on white lines etc and I find they were still warm after a ride home at 3 Deg C. They seem to be lasting about the same as teh 021s too. A worthy upgrade in my humble opinion.

Thumbs Up

I only bought the bike 3 weeks ago and the dealer put them on new for me Sad

Wouldn't mind a set of scrubs for when it warms up again, any legality issues with them? obviously as they have barely any tread.

Cant offer much help - but i'm in need of a new rear for my SV, and looking at race scrubs as i cant afford new rubber at the mo, so if you decide against using the one's you've got spare, drop me a PM with a price and i might take one off your hands !!!! Thumbs Up

I'd use 'em, get heat in quicker and generally more grip, banana skins when cold though. Used to use my old race tyres on the road.
Once went to a trackday at Cadwell (rode there) in the nineties on a GSXR 750 on slicks Shocked . Bit dodgy at first where it was damp near home but cracking on the track. Good job the feds weren't as keen then I suppose, betcha wouldn't get away with it now Rolling Eyes

I had a road legal wet Goldspeed - it was terrible, definitely when not hot. Never really tried to push it when hot because I had no real confidence in it.

Worse than some random road 21" for trail bikes, never mind supercorsas etc when cold.

I tend to run race scrubs all the time, I do a bit of work for some local racers in exchange for their old tyres so have a fair few in stock.

I can usually get about 1000 miles to a rear on the R1, fronts seem to last forever.

I ride through all weathers and yet to have a 'moment' except when being a pillock on cold tyres.

I did toy with the idea of fitting a full wet front to the r1, ok so the 'not for road use' could cause a bit of an issue but I'm prepared to run the risk. Not sure how long it'd last mind you..

Legality aside, 'proper' race wets are a no-no for the road as they would overheat and turn to much in no time in the dry!

BT021's are complete and utter wank. They don't warm up, ever.

I dunno.. With a hard enough compound wet I couldn't see it getting up to temperature during normal road riding. Especially during winter.

A rear could, with the power tearing it up.

The last race this year, I ended up on a fast drying track with full wets due to wonky Anglesey weather. The back did wear considerably even with my chasing the damp patches, but the front wasn't so bad.

I expect in the middle of summer, on a dry, warm day and a fast ride they'd last no time granted. But in winter?

Got to be worth a try..
