As the title says, I've been riding the ZX7R on and off for the last 3 odd years and although I love it my back is starting to hurt even doing the short ride to work and home.

I was just wondering what bikes out there give you a more upright riding position. I was parked up next to a Bandit 600 with Renthal's which looked quite appealing until the guy started it up and it sounded like an ants fart lol

Maybe a Bandit 1200? What other bikes out there would fit the bill? I'll basically be looking to pay whatever I can get for the 7r so it wont be anything brand new and flash.

Opinions?

Cheers

Si

More detail about your back problems probably worth it.

For instance, a sports bike seems to be better for my lower back (as the impact doesn't travel straight up it.)
However, I found that when wearing my Caberg helmet on sports bikes it gave me upper back pain - took me a couple of months to work out it was the heavy flip lid and I'm fine with a lighter Shoei.

You can stick higher/wider bars on most bikes. You could consider this for your current bike too.

You can make most bikes sound loud if you want - my c90 sound pretty meaty with an open pipe Smile.

the yamaha fazers are great sit up bikes, ive got an fzs 600 and i have problems with sciatica. this bike never gives me any back trouble however the gsx-r i have does lol

try them out or a bandit would be good. anything where your natural posture can remain would be a good start. honda cb's yam fj's bandits kwak z1000 etc anything with tall bars instead of clip ons is a good one to look for. try and get to a dealer with loads of used bikes, have a sit on loads of them see what feels right.

I've had a weak back ever since I was young. It's nothing in particular just gets really stiff and painful if I lean over for certain periods of time, I think it's getting slightly worse as I get older as it never used to bother me when i was younger.

I did consider putting different bars on my bike but would prefer an outright change i think.

I was looking at fazers last night and quite like the look of them.

That looks like an abomination Evoboy. Shocked.

There are plenty more upright bikes around, VFR800s?

As G says, it depends on your back. He doesn't do impact for example, whereas I don't do standing up for long periods, and I prefer 'sit up and beg' type bikes for my back.

I did read a letter in a magazine a few years ago saying that a man with a bad back bought a VFR800 and after riding it for a bit was almost completely cured, but he didn't think the NHS could stretch to buying a VFR for all patients with acute back pain! Laughing

I too have a bit of a dodgy back (I am near 70!) and tried a scooter and a few bikes before I settled on the BMW F650CS. OK, it is a quirky sort of bike suited to a pensioner but it shifts fast enough for me and the road handling is superb. It has the advantage of a sit-up riding position and a relatively low seat (3 seat height options are available). Mine is standard height but that still allows me to have feet flat on the floor. I find that helps a lot because (my experience) back "tweaks" often come when you have to strain a bit to hold the bike upright.

Works.

Still more fun than a VFR!

You also get the full power motor and sportbike handling, but with the situp position.

you have to bare in mind that the zx7r in comparison to a lot of bikes is very forward and biased onto the wrists, doesnt help being a fair stretch to the bars also.

I had a wee ride on tuttons zx6r A1p, and it felt like a naked in comparison to my 7r it was so upright....

If you need even more upright, maybe get something like a vfr? Fairings and comfort?

A Trial bike is absolutely the wrong thing for a bad back. No seat, light weight, have to be nimble to get the thing to climb up rocks...

A Trail bike on the other hand...

FWIW when I mentioned my bad back and it not liking sports bikes quite a few different people said to try the Triumphs (can't remember actual model now though).

Might be worth sitting on one or two and seeing about a test ride?

Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the reply's. It has certainly given me food for thought.

I quite like the idea of an Africa Twin or a Triumph tiger but have to take into account the fact I have midget legs Laughing

I saw a post on here a day or two ago where you could size up a range of bikes but can't remember the topic name or find it anywhere Rolling Eyes
